Mark Dantonio
Bumped from the FanPosts. What do y'all think?
Found out today that Dantonio played DB for y'all back in the 70s.
This guy's one of the brightest young coaches in the country. Is there any sentiment in Columbia to bring him back to his alma mater when Spurrier finally steps down?
He's currently making $1.1 at Michigan State, and I'm not sure you'd be able to pull him away, but I'd definitely have him in the back of my mind if I were a Gamecock fan.

Not there yet...
That’s something that is still 3,4, or 5 years away. Hard to speculate about that now.

Well...
I, for one, wouldn’t be against the idea. Dantonio has had some success, although I’d like to see more of what he can do. But like Charlestowne said, we’re still a few years away from that the day when we’ll be looking for a new leader.

I'm not overly impressed with Dantonio
Though I had forgotten that he managed to get Michigan State back to a bowl game last year, which should count for something.
I will say that Dantonio, if successful, would follow my formula for a post-Spurrier head coach: A pick from a mid-major or medium-prestige BCS school with some type of South Carolina ties.

Echo the above....
No one down here is looking to “the next coach.”
However, just to address your point, I have always been a fan of getting the up-and-comer to a program like USC, rather than a guy lateralling from another BCS program. Facts are, we aren’t likely competitive enough to haul away a guy from a BCS program – we can’t offer so much money as to bludgeon the guy into coming, and the other program likely doesn’t have too many more flaws than we do (some exceptions – e.g., Duke, Baylor, Vandy).
While it’s easily said, I remember when Meyer was tearing it up at Bowling Green thinking he should come here (I still think we may have been spared a loss in 2001 when that game was canceled and we ended up playing Wofford instead).
Frankly, I don’t think there’s a strong enough mid-major coach out there that really entices me. So, if I had to hire us a new coach today, I’d go with Grobe. Dantonio may end up being a good one, but I think you’re going to find that out at MSU, and if he is, you’ll probably end up losing him to someone other than us (if you lose him at all).
