Gameday Open Thread: NC State at South Carolina

N.C. State Wolfpack at South Carolina Gamecocks, Aug 28, 2008 8:00 PM EDT

If this wolf with a funny hat doesn't scare you, nothing will. Although I actually think this wolf is pretty cool as far as old-school logos go.

All right, people! Football is finally here, and tonight we take on the NC State Wolfpack. Feel free to hold forth in the comments with your thoughts on the game.

Nothing to do with the game

But my all time favorite O’Brien joke, from EDSBS:

Tom O’Brien will wake and eat a bowl of Wheetabix, the same cereal that’s been waking up Tom O’Brien and the O’Brien household for twenty years. And Tom O’Brien will say out loud, "That’s a satisfying bowl of cereal." Then he will finish that bowl of cereal.

I don’t know why it cracks me up, but it probably describes him to a T.

EDSBS...

That’s great. He’s in the military, so he probably is a pretty routine sort of guy.

I’ll be off to the bar in a bit to watch the game (unfortunately, I now live far away from Columbia, so I won’t be at the WB), and will try to get back with some thoughts afterwards. Let’s beat that Pack!

Go Cocks!

I love the way our defense looks early

N.C. State can barely get the play off before we come crashing in

hate

the freakin interception. but love the defense :)

SEC Representin'!

I don’t have cable, so no game for me, but it sounds like a reasonable start. If so, then the SEC’s off and running early (Vandy has 17-3 over Miami (OH) at the end of the 1st).

I’m curious to hear how your team looks, though.

by Hooper on Aug 28, 2008 8:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I know it's 3 INTs, but how bad does it really look?

(Obviously, it looks horrid. I was wondering how much was lost/clueless/panicking QB, how much was bad O-line play, or how much was poor route running/whatever.)

by Hooper on Aug 28, 2008 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, it's been bad QBing

He has been essentially throwing balls all over the place. The real shortcoming has been throwing it even when linebackers are falling back into coverage. He’s trying to throw it over the LBs, with predictable results.

Meanwhile, I’m hoping we didn’t just paralyze their quarterback. Hasn’t moved, cart on the field. Not a dirty play — one of our players just knocked the guys head into another defender’s knee — but it doesn’t look good.

Moving his feet but not his arms

Then he gives the thumbs up.

Hopefully, that’s good

Halftime Thoughts

Offense: Ugh. Beecher’s 3 INTs were ugly — Spurrier, so far, has been true to his word about patience. The offensive line hasn’t been doing anything for the running game, but Beecher’s not getting mauled or anything. The running game is nonexistent. Kenny McKinely and Dion LeCorn have been doing some good things — when Beecher gets them the ball.

Defense: The saving grace. In case Tyrone Nix still hasn’t figured it out, this is a bend-but-don’t break defense. You allow them to get some first downs, but not points. A missed field goal is all N.C. State has to show for their efforts so far. The run defense is improved, at least marginally, and the team has managed to force some turnovers.

Special teams: Succop accounts for the only points so far, and there’s really nothing to complain about.

Yes, we always suck in openers. But can we score some points?

by cocknfire on Aug 28, 2008 9:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sounds like it's getting better.

INTs aside, the stat sheet isn’t horrid for Beecher. Safe passes and weak NCSU secondary?

by Hooper on Aug 28, 2008 10:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Scratch that.

I’ll be looking forward to your reports this week. I feel for you, though. Egad.

Hi folks,

My wife is from York county. We live in Seattle, but plan to move back down in a few years. I’ve been a big SC fan for about six years now, as well as a Washington State Cougar fan, so… Yeah… Life has kind of sucked for a while. Glad this site is here.

What in the world is with our O line tonight??

I don't feel anything anymore.

by kevin_ess on Aug 28, 2008 10:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think they've improved as much as we thought they had

They were protecting Beecher and just doing poorly on the run. Now they can’t do anything.

Shame. I'm getting REALLY TIRED of all the Clemson talk thus far.

Between ESPN and my father-in-law…

I don't feel anything anymore.

By the way, just so you know,

my sig is what it is because I’m a Mariners fan.

I don't feel anything anymore.

by kevin_ess on Aug 28, 2008 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Appropriate for both, at this point

At least Seattle has Ichiro. Not much else, but they have that.

by cocknfire on Aug 28, 2008 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So totally not worth it!!

I don't feel anything anymore.

Dumb move by Cook

Yeah, it’s borderline. But that’s dumb.

by cocknfire on Aug 28, 2008 10:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Bwahahahaha!

Nice snap there!

I don't feel anything anymore.

I like that Smelley is getting in here

We can see what he can do. Hopefully, though, Beecher isn’t hurt too much.

by cocknfire on Aug 28, 2008 10:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Why does ESPN feel the need to remind us

That “Every touchdown makes a statement”?

Particularly when, in the garbage time of a 48-13 blow, it most assuredly does not.

by cocknfire on Aug 28, 2008 10:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Because ESPN sucks big time.

I don't feel anything anymore.

by kevin_ess on Aug 28, 2008 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So what's the deal with Smelley not starting?

You’ll have to pardon my ignorance – I get far too little SC news up here.

I don't feel anything anymore.

by kevin_ess on Aug 28, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Spurrier said after the Spring Disaster ... excuse me, Game

That Beecher was the starter and he’d stick by Beecher. Which he obviously did until Beecher was hurt. But I think that has to be seriously re-evaluated now.

by cocknfire on Aug 28, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, absolutely.

Smelley is unrefined, but too good to sit, in my mind. Look at the way the offense has perked up. They’re behind that kid.

I don't feel anything anymore.

Smelley hits his man at the 35!

35 yard pass, dialed in!

I don't feel anything anymore.

Question...

Does a team with a Soccop and a Smelley, does that equal a team with Pujols?

I don't feel anything anymore.

by kevin_ess on Aug 28, 2008 11:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow - it's like English is my second language.

Sorry about that colossal failure.

I don't feel anything anymore.

Hey, thanks for this.

How new is this site? How many members thus far?

I don't feel anything anymore.

by kevin_ess on Aug 28, 2008 11:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

...And how many new members completely screw up unfunny jokes?

Apparently I’ve cemented my legacy here.

I post a lot at the Mariners blog Lookoutlanding.com, which is part of the SBN network. We’re a depressed bunch of losers. I also am the founder of Marinercentral.com, if you ever have the urge to keep up with the Mariners’ suckitude.

Anyway, I’m excited the season is finally here, and as much as I like the Panthers…

GO SEAHAWKS.

Oh. And go Gamecocks!

I don't feel anything anymore.

Sorry, I was off writing a review

We’ve been around about a year. In fact, almost exactly a year now. It’s an outgrowth of my old site, Cock ‘n’ Fire, and is now primarily run by Gamecock Man as I take on a new project for SBN.
