Carolina Football: What's up with that?
Today's edition of "Carolina Football: What's up with that?" features a note by The State's Phil Kornblut. Apparently USC has chosen to pull its scholarship offer from one Jonathan Davis (DB - Tucker, GA). Little was said about that incident except that USC chose to notify Davis by calling... his coach. What's up with that? First off, I don't like the practice of programs promising kids scholarships only to revoke them later, especially this late in the game. Call me old fashioned, but I still believe that a man's word is his bond. Even if the coaches think they made a mistake in judging his athletic ability, I'm of the opinion that they should honor it - especially since national signing day is right around the corner. The one exception I would make to that rule is if the recruit in question has not been performing academically or has been in legal trouble. I don’t know what Davis’ story is, but it’d be nice to have a little info. And calling his coach? We at least owe him a one-on-one phone call. *sigh*

Not sure I agree...
Ok, So I agree that we should have called the kid. But this was a RC recruit. Most of what we are hearing are rumors, so I won’t repeat them here. But I do trust that our coaches pulled the scholly for a legit reason. This isn’t something that the coaching staff makes a habit out of, so I can only conclude that there was a pretty good reason for it.
Link I ran across on the comments part of a The State article
OK, so at least for me, everything is starting to get a little clearer. This snippet explains why Ron Cooper might have been asked to look for a new home as well as why USC might have pulled Jonathan Davis’ scholarship offer. Assuming there is any truth in it, that is…
Charlestowne, what’s wrong with Ron Cooper recruits? Something I’m missing here?

I didn't mean...
RC’s recruits in general, but Davis in particular. The fact that Cooper is no longer with us, and that Davis was a Cooper recruit, would help explain the timing. After Cooper left, I imagine the other coaches divided up the kids that he was recruiting and started a process of either continually recruiting or re-evaluating the kids themselves. After everything that we’ve heard about RC and “problem” it wouldn’t surprise me if the other coaches re-evaluated each recruit for themselves. Again, I didn’t want to go into too much about why the coaches might have gone cold on Davis, because I don’t think we’ll hear the whole story until after signing day, if at all.

Just read that...
And here is the AJC link that Person references:

Davis seems like a good kid (don’t they all). At least he’s got the right attitude. I still would have liked to see USC honor his offer. Maybe after explaining to Davis that USC was in need of more corner backs and that his chance of playing early wasn’t that great he would have decommitted on his own and we could have avoided all this negative publicity. I think that would have been the smarter route to take unless there really is something more sinister in the works here that none of us are privy to.

Couldn't resist.
This has absolutely NO factual foundation so take it with a grain of salt, but it was too interesting to pass up. Below is a comment from one of the AJC articles about Davis. It is supposedly by one of his family members (Tye Davis – Father?). Probably a little too much “hearsay” for this blog, so I won’t make a habit of it. Note: I cleaned up a few typos.

This is from his family and we want to thank all the people that do not know my son and still write about him. We are going to be fine in the furture. Before you say anything bad about someone get to know that person. People like you guys are the reason my son does not read message boards and if you do not have anything good to say do not say anything. We are not upset at S C. We wish them a great season. Once again, Jonthan Davis will be fine. Thanks

Interesing...
Also worth reading: Person’s take on the Smelley situation: http://jperson.thestateonline.com/?p=172. I don’t always agree with Person, but you can’t really argue with him here. Smelley couldn’t have been happy at Carolina. The reference to 2007 is interesting. I personally never thought Mitchell should have been benched in the first place, but you have to admit that it came as a surprise when Spurrier decided to put him back in the mix after Smelley had played some good games, and Person is right that Smelley has never really been the same player since then other than in brief spots.
Ah, the 2007 season. What memories. I’ll have to give 2008 one thing: it has nothing on 2007 in terms of heartbreak.
