Spurrier hires Eric Wolford as OL Coach
Wolford comes from the Zooker's staff at Illinois. As you can see from his Illinois page, Wolford is known for orchestrating effective rushing offenses, most notably the Illini's Rashard Mendenhall attack in 2007. The Illini had a drop-off in rushing production in 2008 as they moved, with mixed success, to making Juice Williams the focus of their offense and ran the ball with a RB-by-committee approach. Wolford's track record, however, suggests that 2008's inconsistencies were an aberration. This guy appears to be a solid young coach that can solve some of our rushing and QB-protection problems.
So, Gamecocks fans, what do you think about this hire? If there are any Iowa fans still lurking around, feel free to tell us what we need to know about the job this guy did in Urbana-Champaign.

Yeah, just read about his recruiting exploits...
Hopefully he can help us pull in some top-notch linemen. Also worth mentioning that while the Illini dropped off a bit on their rushing attack this year, they still ranked 38th in the nation compared to our 112th. This guy seems like exactly the type of OL coach we need.

We need something.
I think a lot of our problems on offense could be cured with effective O-Line play. Hopefully, this will begin a process to stabilize that area. I can’t think of one single offseason where the line had/has NOT been a question mark. Simply put, if we keep thinking of our team as one that can challenge for an SEC East title, then that is unacceptable.

Truthfully,
I don’t know what to think about the state of the football team right now. I like this hire, but then again, I know little about him and everyone looks like a great hire if you only see their team profile page. Joe Person of The State seems to think Ron Cooper was asked to leave. I find that somewhat suspect given the quality of DBs we have put into the NFL in recent years in conjunction with LSU picking him up. Although, if Captain’s behavior this season was any indication, maybe Cooper really was just on the receiving end of some great talent. Can’t really blame David Reaves for joining his brother-in-law’s squad, that’s just the nature of the profession. And I really really would have liked us to throw some money Mark Smith’s way to try to keep him here. A good strength coach does so much for an athletic program, not just football. Up until this year’s three game skid to end the season I have been able to take away something positive from each of Spurrier’s years here at USC. But being out-scored 118- 30 in our last four games is inexcusable. I guess I’ll need to see how the new hires shake out before making any rash statements about next year. But I swear on the Maxcy Monument if our first offensive drive ends in an interception in the Spring game, I’m going to flip my shit.

Mark Smith...
I’m not sure what to think of his departure. On the one hand, I’ve heard that a lot of guys weren’t in the best shape they could have been in or eating the best diet they could have, and the problems with players getting cramps would seem to confirm that. On the other hand, we stayed relatively injury free this year. So his success was mixed this year. I just hope we find someone better.
