More Possible Infractions at UT
Wow. Just wow. Tennessee is apparently now under investigation for even more violations.
Hamilton said in a telephone interview that the SEC was looking into the actions of a Tennessee recruiting intern, Steve Rubio, who flew to South Florida with Coach Lane Kiffin recently and visited the athletic powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale.
Under N.C.A.A. rules, Rubio, who graduated from Aquinas and volunteered there, is not allowed to recruit off the Tennessee campus. Hamilton said the concern was whether Rubio did recruiting work and contacted players while he was at the high school.
Maybe Lane should get back to work studying for that test he supposedly aced.
In all seriousness, this could get ugly for UT. They look like the very acme of lacking institutional control right now.

I am a little ashamed to say I am really enjoying this...
Question: What is the worst possible infraction a school can commit as far as the NCAA is concerned? I think that would be paying recruits cold hard cash to come to your university. That’s what got SMU the death penalty, right?
Well, if there is a worse infraction, it would have to be paying women to have sex with recruits so they will attend your school. At first I was inclined to disregard the more salacious rumors as mere hen-cackle, but it seems the rumors are gaining credibility with each passing day.
If these allegations are true, I don’t see any reason why UT shouldn’t get the death penalty for a few years, do you? What’s more, this can’t even be pinned on Lane Kiffin. As much as I’d like to see Kiffin tagged with as much FLAK as possible, this sort of thing doesn’t just spring up over the course of 10 months. You don’t just post a want ad for attractive co-eds with loose morals in the school news paper. This is a culture that has to be developed through subtle manipulation over a number of years. That, coupled with Lane’s flippant attitude toward rules of conduct, does not bode well for UT.
In short, it looks like Tennessee is screwed.

I honestly believe some of the more lurid rumors...
They’ve been going around anecdotally since the weekend in question when the hostesses traveled to the Brynes game. Maybe it’s not all as bad as it might seem, but where there’s smoke, there’s fire. It’s hard to believe it’s possible for a program to condone this kind of behavior, but I guess anything is possible in college athletics. I suppose we’ll learn soon enough.
And I agree that this isn’t just about Kiffin. Kiffin is drawing more attention to himself and the program by his brash attitude and disregard for the rules, but all that means in this situation is that he’s making a corrupt culture more visible.
I wonder if the NCAA would give UT the death penalty. It seems they might balk at the idea given UT’s national prominence and history—see how they handled Alabama a decade ago—but this is looking really bad. At any rate, if half of this stuff is true I expect you’ll at least see heavy probation, bowl and TV bans, etc. As we saw with Alabama, that kind of thing can cripple you for a long time, and it remains to be seen whether or not Tennessee would be capable of regrouping like ’Bama has done.

The NCAA will never give another program the death penalty
After seeing what giving SMU the death penalty did to both that program, and more importantly, the SWC in the 1980s, I’m pretty confident that the NCAA doesn’t want to travel down that path again. Especially when the school in question is a traditional power in one of the premier conferences. It bears remembering that, at the time, SMU was a perennial Top 20 football school and the SWC was one of the “power” football conferences. The death penalty SMU got ended all that and effectively destroyed the team and conference – which, ironically, is what gave rise to the current incarnations of the SEC (Arkansas joining from SWC) and the Big XII.
If all the allegations about UT are true, then it is bad, very, very bad. But not death penalty bad. I think the only way a major program would get the death penalty would be the open and brazen money transfers to students, coupled with some 1980s University of Miami/late 80s UNLV bball association with gamblers/coke dealers/gangsters. And even THEN, it would be close. If Alabama didn’t get the DP in 2001/2 (when they were just coming off probation for previous violations), then UT won’t get it here.
I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.
All good points...
You’re probably right that we will never see another death penalty except in a truly exceptional case. It just seems that there’s too much going against the possibility, chiefly money and precedent.

Kiffin thinks its a compliment
I posted my thoughts on this yesterday under the fan posts… but since then there has been an update. Lane Kiffin seems to think this is a compliment , per ESPN.
Seriously, Lane…. Everyone is after you for prostituting college students only because it works?! This shows some serious lack in moral fortitude, if you ask me.
Sorry I didn't see your Fanpost.
As far as Kiffin goes, you’d think that he’d shut his mouth for a little while and wait for this to blow over. I know that he thinks his bravura is what is helping him succeed recruiting, but it’s also what might be the end of him.

Un-freaking-believable.
I’m beginning to wonder if Kiffin is truly delerious.
