Urban Meyer Paves Way to Become Next Gamecock Head Coach

University of Florida coach, Urban Meyer, announced yesterday that the Gator’s game against Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl will be his last at the helm. Meyer, 45, cited health concerns as his primary reason for stepping away from the Gator program. Even more recently, however, speculation has surfaced that Meyer may in fact be positioning himself to take a different coaching job in the future.

Star-divide

Naturally, most pundits are pointing to South Carolina, Meyer’s self-described "dream job," as his most likely destination once he gets his ticker in order. One can be forgiven for drawing the obvious lines between Meyer and South Carolina given all of the history Meyer has with the Gamecocks. Consider:

1.) Urban Meyer is a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. South Carolina currently harbors the Gamma Nu chapter of Sigma Chi.

2.) Meyer was once an assistant coach at Notre Dame. This would be the same Notre Dame that former Gamecock head coach Lou Holtz once lead to a National Championship. It is doubtful that Holtz neglected to mention the various charms of living in Columbia to Urban when the two surely met at some sort of Golden Domer reunion.

3.) Meyer has followed in the footsteps of one Steve Spurrier for quite some time. Spurrier Coached at UF. Meyer Coached at UF. Spurrier won the SEC East. Meyer won the SEC East. Spurrier won the SEC. Meyer won the SEC. Spurrier won the National Championship. Meyer won the National Championship. It naturally follows that Meyer would once again parallel Spurrier’s career path by taking a brief hiatus from college football only to return a few years later as South Carolina’s head coach.

Clearly South Carolina beckons to coaching talent both far and near. The allure of following such coaching legends as Paul Dietzel, Lou Holtz, and Steve Spurrier may prove too great for Urban Meyer to resist. After all, Spurrier has said many times that he plans on coaching for only another 4-5 years. We’ll need a new coach then, and Meyer might be just the guy for the job. So please join me, Gamecock faithful, in wishing Urban a speedy recovery. We might end up hearing from him again sooner than you think.

Touche.

Let’s see… he’s 45 now, so he should be back on our radar in about 20 years.
