Smelley Talks to Saban about Suiting Up for the Tide
Looks like Chris is keeping his options open. While I'm sure he's serious about playing baseball, this goes to show you that a chance to get on the diamond wasn't the only reason he left Carolina.

Not sure what I think of this...
McElroy and Star are going to be duking it out for the starter spot. I’m sure we’d like to add proven depth at the 3rd position without having to take the redshirt of of McCarron, but I don’t know that we’ve got the scholly to give him.

He could be useful to you as a backup, but I can't imagine that he'd seriously compete for a starting spot...
Hard to imagine him beating out some of the guys you’ve brought in recently. I could be wrong, though.

Yea, that was my thinking...
Just like the NFL, it’s good to go 3 deep with experience. Our position is going to be a #1 with limited experience and/or #2 with no experience (I’m assuming that McElroy hangs on to be starter at the season’s start), and a #3????. Enter maybe a Smelley…if we have the scholly to give him.

Smelley was often better off the bench anyways...
He’s actually not as bad as people say he is. I think he had trouble performing in the limelight. When he came off the bench he always played well and supposedly he was far and away superior to Stephen Garcia in practice. There may be a place for him at Bama if you’ve got the scholarship, but it likely won’t be as much more than a capable backup.

He's already at Bama...
so he doesn’t need a scholarship, correct? I’m not the most knowledgeable person on NCAA eligibility, but can’t a kid just play on the team for the heck of it? If that’s the case, Bama doesn’t really have anything to lose. By the way, I hope it did not escape Gamecock nation that Smelley was at the Bama vs. USC basketball game, wearing Bama gear, and the Cocks won. If I were the superstitious type, I might suggest a pattern…

Well, he could walk on, so I guess you're right and he doesn't need the scholarship...

Isn't he playing under a baseball scholarship...
If so, he doesn’t need a football scholarship, he’s already covered. He’d be just like any other two sport athlete in college. Only one team pays.

Yeah, that makes sense...
And in that case, I don’t see why the Tide wouldn’t want to have him around on the gridiron. He may not win any Heismans for you, but he’s a serviceable guy to have around if all your other guys get hurt.
