What can the Carolina Panthers Expect from CB Captain Munnerlyn

Hello Gamecock fans, Jaxon here with SBN's Panthers site. We've got a post up on CB Captain Munnerlyn I was hoping I could get some feedback on from Gamecock fans. Some of the questions we have include:

  • Is he better in zone or man coverage?
  • Do you think his height will impede his ability to play in the NFL?
  • What are his strengths and weaknesses?
  • What was the deal with his benching last season?
  • Do you think he can return kicks and/or punts in the NFL?
  • Has he ever played the 'gunner' position in kick coverage?

Any other comments would be appreciated. You can post them here or on my site, whatever your preference. Thanks.

Alright. I'll take a stab at it.

My general response: Most Carolina fans have mixed feelings about Munnerlyn. He played great in 2007 but didn’t meet expectations last year. Although athletically gifted, he would occasionally have mental lapses in coverage and get beaten by players that he should have been able to hang with.

In response to your questions:

1. Take a look at Munnerlyn’s statements here. Munnerlyn had more success in man-to-man schemes under former DC Ty Nix in 2007. However, some of Captain’s statements—he says people didn’t throw to him and that he just didn’t have chances to make big plays—in this article should be taken with a grain of salt. Munnerlyn did get crossed up and beaten from time to time in 2008.

2. I’m not sure but I would imagine so. Munnerlyn is fast and has a nice vertical, so he can make up for his height deficiencies to some degree. However, he would be a liability when defending jump balls and in other situations where big receivers take advantage of smaller players.

3. As I said at the top, I think he makes mental mistakes from time to time.

4. If I remember correctly, he missed a weight-training session. You should probably know that Spurrier has called him out for lack of effort once or twice.

5. He has shown some potential returning kickoffs and punts. He could find his place in the NFL doing this. In the Kentucky game btcoop71 is referring to, he both returned a blocked FG and took a kickoff 84 yards. That’s his special teams career highlight, but he’s done good things in other games as well.

6. Yes.

I know some of this sounds negative, but the guy kind of left a bad taste in my mouth after he had a subpar 2008 and then decided to leave Carolina early to barely get drafted. I do think he has potential and hope he works out for you guys.

Expect for when you play the Saints. :-)

And oh yeah.

He’s from my home town. So he’s got that going for him.

Ditto.

I tried to care enough to write something about Munnerlyn, but in the end I’m just ambivalent toward him. For every good thing about him I can think of something bad and vice versa. Good luck to him, but I’m not nearly as concerned about his departure as E. Cook’s.

That's true.

I frankly feel that Captain is replaceable. His performance last year was no better than what I think we can expect from one of the underclassmen that will take his place. Losing Cook and even Stoney Woodson is more problematic, IMO.

Sorry to hear that

Though I’m not a Gamecock fan I live in Charleston so I can’t help but hear whats going on at USC. I didn’t realize he had fell out of favor so far. It does seem stupid to leave school early only to be drafted in the 7th round. Your secondary took a hit this off-season so good luck in the fall. Being a GT alum I always pull for the ’cocks at least once a year and sometimes twice (UGA, Clemson).

Honestly, I think Captain has some potential.

Hopefully he just underperformed last year and will work hard with you guys and become a contributor. I want to see all Gamecocks succeed in the NFL, and Captain is no different. I just think he left a bad taste in our mouths.
