Tuesday News and Notes: Darrell Givens to Rutgers and Questions about Others Trying to Get into School

If you haven't heard yet, the Darrell Givens saga appears to be all but over. Givens appears to be going to Rutgers. Rutgers has yet to formally admit Givens, so there's still an outside chance that that won't work out, either. However, sources report that Rutgers coach Greg Schiano has promised Givens that he will get in, and one can only assume he knows what he's talking about.

All in all, it would have been nice to land Givens for the added depth in the secondary, but it appears that he may just not want to be here all that much. If he did, he could have waited until today to find out if he got in or not. That being the case, maybe it's best that he's not going to be here. I wish him the best, but I kind of like all the recent reports of solidarity on the team. Although I hear he knows some of the guys on the team, Givens might not have fit in.

The other important part of Person's report today is that admissions will also be evaluating some of the other borderline qualifiers. The four in question are Ben Axon, Steven Singleton, Rokevious Watkins, and Leon Mackey. Person seems to think Axon and Singleton are in, while the Watkins and Mackey may have a harder time. Personally, I have to admit that I see Axon as the most questionable. Color me suspicious. If the coaching staff wants him, though, I just hope they've had a talk with him and know what they're doing. The other guys would all be great additions, so hopefully they'll make it.

It seems....

that Givens didn’t even turn in all the admissions paperwork into USC that he needed. He starting filling out an application last night, but never sent it into the admissions committee. I think that after becoming disappointed that he could not go to Penn State, it really didn’t matter where he was going, as long as he could play. Seems Rutgers was the path of least resistance. Not sure I can really blame him. I’d be disappointed to if I had gone through the whole process and then denied admissions at this point.

What I don’t really understand is how it could have gotten to this point for the young man. Every school signs and places. Its a way on help insure that good football players, that aren’t necessarily good students in high school, get a chance to grow up a bit and become better students at prep schools and still have your school in mind when they’re done. That being the case…. Givens should have know this was a possibility before committing to Penn State to begin with. If that was the case, why was he so disappointed he didn’t get in? If he knew it was a possibility, why wasn’t he ready for it or why didn’t he have a plan in place? If playing on a major team, and not prep school, was so important to him, why did he commit to Penn State to begin with if he can get in somewhere else, but maybe not Penn State?

I don’t want to sit here, an uniformed bystander, and point fingers… but do you see what I’m thinking with this?? Seems like the kid got a bad deal.

My understanding is that the PSU coaching staff told him some things that he needed to do to get in...

But it wasn’t enough for PSU admissions. My guess is that the coaching staff didn’t cover their bases. As is usually the case, the kid is the one that has to suffer.
