Gamecocks Recruiting: Key Remaining Targets

Here are some of the key remaining names on our board. Who do you see us getting?

Marcus Lattimore / RB. Everyone knows the story on this guy. He's the top runningback in the country and he's down to us and Auburn. He says Auburn leads, but he's also reportedly said that he plans to sign with us. We'll know for sure the day before signing day, when he plans to announce to his church. One thing in our favor is that Steve Spurrier has the final in-home visit with Lattimore (Auburn coach Gene Chizik visits two days prior). Spurrier has reportedly been developing a good relationship with the family and is a famously strong closer.

Morgan Moses / OT. Moses is a Virginia verbal coming out of Fork Union Prep, but there's some talk out that UVA will not be able to get him in academically. If that's the case, then we probably have an excellent shot with him. Moses would be a big pickup, and by big I mean he's a huge, physical tackle, perhaps the best in the country. He's also coming from prep school, so he could have a faster impact than a HS lineman.

Justin Parker / LB. Parker is a speedy linebacker out of Beaufort. He's being hotly pursued by Clemson, Georgia Tech, and LSU in addition to the Gamecocks. Reports are that he will likely stay in state and choose between us and the Tigers.

Ace Sanders / WR. Sanders is a projected slot receiver, a position of need for us. He was originally supposed to go to South Florida, but the firing of Jim Leavitt has given us a shot with him. He has plenty of other offers, though, and USF is still in it for him now that they've hired Skip Holtz.

Mychal Rivera / Kegan Funderburk / Clive Walford / TE. The staff plans to sign a TE in this class and these are the guys they're pursuing. Reports are that Funderburk (who also plays DE) is the guy they want, but any would be good pickups.

tough to handicap

but I would love for all Marcus, Parker, Moses, Sanders and Riveria/Walford.

Moses will be tough now that Ohio State is knocking on his door. Marcus and Parker seems to me to be favoring to become gamecocks. Sanders and Riveria/Walford will need some more work to completely get them to change their minds about their previous schools and become gamecocks.

If we could get Marcus, Parker, and Moses...

I would call this class an indisputable success. One of the tight ends would be nice, and Sanders would be icing on the cake, but I think Marcus, Parker, and Moses need to be our key targets. You’re right about OSU getting involved with Moses; that can’t be good.

I'll have to admit...

Marcus’s comments about not being sure about our rushing offense have me a bit worried. You really can’t blame him; Auburn has a prolific running game and a genius OC, we have an offense that seems to lack any sense of identity from week to week. I hope Spurrier and Elliott get in and tell Marcus that if he comes here he’ll get the ball. And I hope they mean it.

That has been my main concern with Lattimore all along.

That and our relative depth at RB. Wolford staying would have gone a long way toward waylaying Marcus’s concerns.

If our depth is what he's worried about...

Then surely he doesn’t like the idea of playing with that other five-star RB Auburn has committed.

You’re right about Wolford, though. Marcus was apparently really impressed with our ground game against Florida and Clemson, which was when we finally began to see Wolford’s offense begin to kick in. That’s why I think Elliott getting in there and convincing him is really important.
