Detailed explanation of the coverage breakdown
Travis Haney of the Charleston Post and Courier provides aan explanation of what happened on the busted coverage on 4th and 7 that led to Kentucky's game winning TD. I told you he's the best Gamecock beat writer among traditional media.
The defensive coaches also claim we will run more press coverage in the secondary, so Gamecock Man can hopefully sleep a little easier this week.

Good news on the defensive scheme change.

What I want to know
is why change it in the first place? the aggressive press coverage defense is what had USC as one of the premier Pass defenses in the nation… why fix something that isnt broken??

I mean
you look at the ONE game this season we played aggressive… the Bama game
We pretty much did whatever we wanted to on defense, Bama was at our mercy.

I think we played a fair bit of zone against 'Bama, although not as much as against Kentucky. The difference...
was that we played it better against ’Bama.
Your point still holds, though. Last year we played much more press coverage, and we had a much better defense. Why the change?

Thats a great question. Why change what isn’t broken? I think maybe the with a younger secondary they thought the zone would be an easy scheme for them? I don’t see how it could be any easier than playing man though.

Zone is in many ways more mentally challenging.

It definitely is. Man is difficult to maintain without a strong rush, but mentally simple - cover your guy!

Our rush is coming along, though.
We complained about it earlier in the season, but it’s doing fine now. On one of Kentucky’s TD drives, we got a first-down nine-yard sack. That should have been the end of that drive. It’s our pass coverage that’s the problem now.

I completely agree. We got a good rush on Hartline on the game-winning pass, as well.

Yeah. I wasn't a fan of the three-man rush we used sometimes...
But I guess that goes part and parcel with the zone coverages. When we sent a good rush, we generally got very nice pressure.
