The University of South Carolina will be offering a class called "Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame" beginning next spring, taught by an obsessed professor with a Gaga fansite. Finally a college class with so many real world applications.

I won't say that there can't some merit to the course
Obviously it’s not a semester of “Hey, Lady Gaga is the best musician ever! Tomorrow’s test will be cover her setlist from her show at the Forum.” I suppose fame does breed some fascinating behavior. Still, it seems a bit hokey. Then again, sociology is one of the easiest majors at the school, so it isn’t surprising that this class falls into it.
Man, how embarrassing will it be when someone manages to fail it.

I hope no one fails it.
Can you imagine how in “F” in Gaga will look on a transcript?
Anyways, I don’t see anything wrong with offering the course. It looks like they’re just using Lady Gaga as a starting point to discuss the wider phenomenon of fame. Sociology isn’t a strict skills-based discipline. It’s more about philosophy and thinking, so why not offer a topical course on the celebrity du jour?
