Around SBN: This Should Encourage Juan Mata

Chris Culliver tore his pectoral muscle in the first quarter Saturday. He tried to play through the pain, but it obviously affected his performance. He will have surgery that is likely to cost him at least the remainder of the regular season. Let's hope C.C. Whitlock has a big game against the SEC's top passing attack..

No wonder he did so bad.

I thought that was an uncharacteristic performance. People on here keep saying he’s done poorly all year, but I think he’s our most solid secondary player. I think he ties with Lattimore, only ’cause Maddox provides good depth. That is an enormous loss, and a knockout blow to an already weak secondary. I think that decreases our chances at winning the division by something like 30% probably. Other than Garcia, Jeffery, and a couple key offensive linemen, there could not have been a bigger guy to go down.

I just realized I put that Lattimore sentence in the wrong place.

It was supposed to be the last sentence, lol. I should read things before hitting the post button, or just not post things at 1 am.

Im pretty sure Culliver didnt play any after his injury

so he was just getting beat if im correct on that… and CC is more than capable of playing good defense, he had some great games when he played.

If he tore it in the first quarter then he did.

As far as I know he played the whole game. Whitlock is ok, but he already gets on the field a good bit. It’s whoever will get on the field after him, in substitution packages or when folks get tired, that concerns me.

I think I heard Spurrier say on his show

that Culliver didn’t play in the second half. But I don’t remember. And Spurrier is often wrong about who he thinks is in the game at what time.

I don't think Culliver has had a great season...

He’s a good player, but he hasn’t transitioned well to cornerback in my opinion. That said, we don’t have much depth in the secondary, and this will be a major blow to us there. I don’t even really know who we have behind Whitlock. I guess we could move Auguste back to corner and play LeCorn at safety.

Naw, he was right.

I’m looking at the game right now, and Whitlock is out there in the second half.

Feeling Bad for Chris

Culliver is a senior. I doubt he will be given a hardship year for an injury in the eighth game, so that will likely be the last time he is in a Gamecock uniform. I agree with Blade that this is a big loss – on par with losing Shaq Wilson all season.

Hopefully it will compel Stephon Gilmore to ramp up his play. I dont know if Gilmore is having a bit of a sophomore slump, or something is going on his life that is distracting him, but he just doesnt seem to be playing with the same intensity / mental awareness he had as a freshman.

Injuries are the name of the game. Teams with good coaching and depth can overcome them. I think our LB’s have stepped up despite losing Wilson. Time to see if our secondary can.

The LBs have certainly stepped up quite nicely...

But we had some talented guys that could help us there. They didn’t have Wilson’s experience, but they had the potential to step up and be just as good. I’m not sure if we have anyone like that who’s ready to step into Culliver’s role.

The good news...

is that if Garcia steps up, this team could win some shootouts.

Culliver is a decent player but, he has never really lived up to expectations and really has an attitude problem. He has gotten several technicals over the years for late hits and stuff like that. He is a hit to the secondary but, I think using Auguste at corner and Licorn at safety is a good idea. Licorn is a fast player who really wants to play, I say we give him a shot. He has had some decent plays over the years, mostly at WR though. Being a former WR, maybe he’ll provide us with some much needed INT’s.

I hope that

LeCorn has already been practicing with the D – as many have suggested – and the announcement comes after he knows the schemes and assignments . I think most of us agree he was too good to not try to find him another position to play. If we’re going to get Shamier Jeffery to commit to USC, I wonder if he’d like to play safety!

You don't really add depth to the secondary by moving over a WR.

Sure, it’s an extra warm body, but the two positions are completely different. Think about the learning curve for a first year player transitioning from high school to college. It’s difficult to make any meaningful impact in that first year. Asking a WR to learn a completely new position exacerbates the problem even more. LeCorn has some experience there, so he could maybe spell our 2nd or 3rd string guys every now and then, but he’s not likely to be very effective. I mean, we have DBs blowing coverages who have been playing the same position for years. There is no reason to think that a converted WR won’t do much worse. We could move as many WRs to DB as we want, but it still won’t help our depth at the position. At this point in the season we’re stuck with what we have.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, either. We might have guys like CC Whitlock and Mart Markett step up. An injured Culliver hasn’t exactly been playing lights out for a few weeks now (107.5 said he had been injured for while earlier today, not sure if that’s accurate). What seems like bad news can often times have a good effect on overall team performance. When was the last time anyone has thought about Wesley Saunders (other than right this moment)?

Well...

LeCorn has been playing defense for some time now, and I expect that he knows the position by now. Of course, that also means that he’s probably not any good at it, because if he’s been playing it for a while and isn’t ready to see the field, he must not have learned it well.

Warrior, I think I would have to disagree a little bit with you here. LeCorn played the entire 2008 season in the secondary. It not like he played it once or twice. I’m pretty sure he started there as well and if I’m not mistaken he was taken to the WR spot because he had good hands, it wasn’t because he was a bad defender. I think LeCorn will be able to do some good things and maybe give our secondary a little boost.

Remember Syvelle Newton playing safety in 2006?

It’s not impossible to make the switch to safety. Corner is a little tougher from what I understand, though. I think it takes a lot of practice to learn how to deal with WRs coming off the LOS.

I'm going to have to disagree with you both.

LeCorn hasn’t played in the secondary with any regularity, and he definitely hasn’t started there. He was recited to USC as a WR. Here are a few excerpts from his university profile:

2007: Named to the Sporting News Freshman All-SEC team… played in 10 games hauling in 27 passes for 315 yards, 11.7 yards per catch… had a trio of touchdown receptions, scoring against North Carolina, Arkansas and Clemson

2008: Made the transition from wide receiver to the Spur linebacker/safety position midway through the season… played in all 13 games, making three starts at wide receiver… moved to safety following the win at Kentucky… credited with six tackles.
2009: Returned to wide receiver in the spring after finishing the 2008 campaign on defense at the Spur position…had to come back from a broken leg suffered on the final play of the Garnet & Black Spring Game… sat out the season opener at NC State as he continued to recover from the broken ankle… returned to action against Georgia in game 2… caught one pass for 13 yards in that contest… made the start against SC State… reinjured his ankle during practice leading up to the Alabama game and was sidelined again… did not return again until the regular season finale against Clemson… finished the season with four catches for 27 yards.

And 2010, didn’t really see the field and was moved to defense. I feel for the guy. He’s been hampered by injuries after a promising freshman season. He’s been a team player about it, though, and you have to love that. Like I said, if any of the receivers are going to contribute on defense, it’s going to be him. But I think its wishful thinking to think that you can pull over WR and add any meaningful depth at the DB position.

If we werent good at wishful thinking

then we wouldn’t be USC fans, would we? :~)

I stand corrected.

I could’ve sworn Lecorn did better on the defense. Oh well, I guess the numbers say something different. Wishful thinking I guess. It was announced last night by Ward that Whitlock is starting CB and Markett is his backup followed by LeGrae.

We were hearing lots of good things about Markett during Spring.

Now’s our chance to learn if any of them were true.

Can't believe his career is already over..

I was super pumped when we got Culliver, he was our first 5 star in a while at that time.. Really thought he would become more of an impact player, although he did play a lot.
