Troy at South Carolina Post-Game: Thoughts / Topics for Discussion Thread

Well, that was fun: Carolina just wrapped up an utterly dominant 69-24 victory over the Troy Trojans. While it may be hard to believe, the game wasn't ever really that close, as Carolina was winning 56-7 at the half and was at that point clicking on all cylinders. This is a solid win for a program that has often struggled to win with gusto in games like this.

A few quick thoughts / topics for discussion:

3. There was no letdown. Perhaps the most impressive thing about this performance is that we didn't look flat after last week's huge performance. Granted, ugly turnovers by Troy had something to do with the 50+-point outburst in the first half, but the optimist in me wants to take this game as an indication that this team has matured enough over the course of the year to play at a high level week in and week out.

2. It was nice to see both some big individual performances by our stars and some of the backups and unsung heroes get some time. Stephen Garcia, Alshon Jeffery, and Marcus Lattimore got to pad their stats a bit, while stalwarts like Patrick DiMarco, Ace Sanders, Brian Maddox, and Jason Barnes got more touches than usual and backups like Matt Grooms and Seth Strickland got a chance to finally see the field and enjoy a reward for their hard work.

1. It's now officially rivalry week. Do we step it up and pay Clemson back for 2003 or do we play uninspired and let the Tigers make a game of it? I think we can all agree that we'd like to give the Tigers what-for after all the years of suffering against them, but I wonder how much the game means to Spurrier. We'll see. Hopefully the good performance today is a sign of what's to come in Death Valley, but, even in a down year for the Tigers, Troy is certainly no Clemson. I expect a tough game.

I think we throw everything at Clemson

We go for a dominating win.

I think Spurrier “gets” it. Spurrier seems very attuned to USC’s history. He knows what it means to build a streak against Clemson – and to create separation in recruiting.

At least I hope so …

Re: Recruiting...

This is why beating Clemson is so important, IMO. It’s not just that we hate them, although that’s part of it, for sure. It’s also that the state can probably only support one elite program, and for us to become that program, we need to beat them consistently and dominate recruiting. You’d think that if Spurrier doesn’t get anything else about the rivalry—and I’m sure he does—that he would at least get the recruiting angle.

I'm totally with you

that has got to be HBC’s main goal, but I think he really wants us to remember him (a) as the coach who dominated us while he was at UF; then (b) as the coach who came here when he could have gone most anywhere, and did things that havent been done before, or at least not done in recent memory .. .stuff like 10 game winning seasons, playing in the SEC Championship game, SEC east champions, beating an AP number 1, keeping in-state talent in South Carolina, and building a winning streak against Clemson, just to name a few either achieved (or possible) this year

No excuse to lose to Clemson.

They’ll be desperate for this win — Dabo especially will need this to keep his job — but we are better than them in almost every respect. Ellington and Bowers are stars and Harper is capable as well, but Parker has checked out mentally and there is no help for him in the passing game. Of course, since this is a rivalry game, anything goes; recently, at least, the better team has often lost.

But if they couldn’t stop Kenny Miles last year, how will they stop Marcus Lattimore this year?

Clemson D has been pretty stout

I think Ellington’s foot injury will limit him which is a shame for CU, because he’s a star, but positive for us since we’re coming in healthier. I think Parker, Harper and Bowers all play at a high level. Parker has to justify walking away from a lot of money to be 6-6 in his last game in Death Valley. Harper is a junior, but plays like a senior – he will try to carry the team on his back. Bowers is on national watch-lists and is a potential All-American. He will be a mad man.

What I like, however, is that CU’s wide-outs and vertical passing game is not dominant, so that our run-stop defensive package should work well. I also like that our OL is vastly improved since last year – which matches Clemson’s DL improvement, plus we get Jarriel King back. All in all, while Clemson has a really good D, so does Florida.

I have to imagine that both staffs peaked ahead beyond Wake Forest and Troy respectively.

I wonder if we’ll throw the Wild-cock at Clemson again? Is that why Stephon (cough, cough, cough) didnt play much against Troy? Or was that a gimmick offense that the HBC doesn’t need with Lattimore and Alshon playing at first-team all SEC level and Garcia doing a solid QB job? Could we trick Dabo with the same gimmick twice? Will he have to waste valuable time to prepare for a wildcat just in case? Ahh…. football in the South …

We do seem to match up well against CU...

Which allays my worries a bit. I like our chances if CU has to lean on Harper to any considerable extent.

Count on it.

Harper is better at catching the ball than any of their receivers, though their TE is very reliable as well. I just don’t think that they can take advantage of our secondary’s play, at least not to an extent that will really burn us. Their running game is as good as ever, though. Have to applaud them for experiencing very little drop-off after Spiller left.

That said, I would be surprised if Ellington plays at all given his need for surgery, but Dabo did allude to it. IMO, that would be a shame since it could put him at risk for further injury, and it shows just how desperate Dabo is.

Does Terry Don fire Dabo

for going 6-6 in year 2.5? Based on what he had returning, I wouldn’t if I was A.D.

I don't think so, but we'll see.

There’s a lot of popular support for firing Dabo. His team has struggled and the way Dabo has handled the media pressure this year has been a textbook case in how to upset the fan-base. However. I think TD gives him one more year. That seems fair to me.

Your right, plus

I dont think they can afford to fire him and pay him out ($750k) and hire a top replacment on top of the Bowden pay out.

Finally....

We put up a ton of points in a game we are supposed to win. Not another struggle to do what we should. Not another Wofford like effort. I don’t know how much that it’s Clemson matters to Spurrier but I think he wants to win every game period. I think the W next weekend is more important than against whom we’re playing.

What SEC team(s) would you compare Clemson's offensive and Defensive units too?

Offense : UGA without AJ Green? Clemson has solid RBs, QBs and OL. Nothing spectacular, but good enough o move the ball around. They have very inconsistent play at WR…nothing at the position that is real dangerous.

Defense: Maybe Bama but with better DBs? It seems to me that the LBs and DL are right up there with the best in the SEC. Miami was the only team to score 30 on them but Clem had 6(!) turnovers in that game. They held NCST and FSU in check …two pretty good offenses.

I think that's about right.

Clemson’s defense is every bit as good as what many SEC teams have. Their problem on offense is bad receiver play and poor play calling (throwing too much, not getting the ball to Ellington enough).

Bowers is a monster. He could cause some serious havoc in this game. If we don’t contain him. He’s the kind of player who could make Garcia look like the Garcia of old. Granted, I think we run the ball a lot here, but you know what I mean.

A little disappointed...

but, we knew going in that we had to be flawless to stay close. Hats off to the USC offense and I have a new-found respect for the Ol’ Ball Coach for calling off the dogs at half-time.

Good luck with the SEC Championship…and as always, Go Trojans!

What has to happen

For the Trojans to win the Sun Belt?

Good luck the rest of the way

FIU...

would have to lose 1 for TROY to share and 2 for TROY to win outright…either of those coupled with winning the 2 remaining on our schedule. Right now, the priority is to get the seniors a bowl bid. They deserve it…

Thank

The stars aligned a bit for Carolina yesterday, but we could all tell Troy is a strong team – we just got an early jump and took advantage of some unfortunate turnovers; every Carolina fan knows that’s the way it can go sometimes. Anyhow, the game was only inches away from being 7-7 in the first. And that was a nifty trick play in the second. Good luck with the rest of y’all’s season.

Good luck winning the Sun Belt. I'll be rooting for you.

Your team is better than it played yesterday. As tryptic wrote, everything kind of came together for Carolina yesterday.
