Notes
The offensive line will be a position to watch. We're losing Hutch Eckerson and Garrett Chisholm to graduation, and Watkins is reportedly considering a jump to the pros, although one would expect him to be back. A.J. Cann, Ryan Broadhead, and Trammell Williams look to get some playing time, as well as perhaps an incoming freshman or two. Look for us to continue to have some depth issues here next year. We were extremely lucky that we didn't suffer any serious injuries on the line this year and will have to hope our luck continues in 2011.
With Gurley out, I'm thinking we move Moore to the slot receiver position. He'll likely be our go-to guy over the middle. Look for him to continue to bulk up and improve his game. It will be interesting to see who else emerges on the WR depth chart with Gurley and Jason Barnes gone. Scruggs will get more looks (look for him to emerge as a solid player), as will incoming freshman Damiere Byrd. Not sure what we're getting with Bennett (who may be more likely to see time on defense) and Smith, who only played in garbage time this year.
I'm not sure who will be the third RB. Perhaps one of the incoming freshmen? We also need to hope Miles sticks around.
FB is a big question mark, as we're losing the guy we've run there for the past few years. Our spread formations use the FB and TE in similar ways, so don't be surprised if Cunningham gets a look here.
Expect for Kelcy Quarles and, if he signs, Jadeveon Clowney to compete for immediate playing time along the defensive line next season. Also look for Sutton to become a major force. Barring injuries, this should again be a position of strength for us, even without Ladi Ajiboye.
LB will again be a position of concern in 2011. Hopefully one of the incoming players will be able to help us.
Should be interesting to see who replaces Lanning on punts and FGs. Could be Wooten on both? We have a couple of other guys listed as punters on the depth chart who I've never heard of, as well, and you never know when someone else might pop up here. At any rate, Lanning will be missed. We've been blessed with Lanning and Ryan Succop for so long that I don't think any of us remember what it's like to have a subpar kicking game. I hope we don't find out again any time soon, because it's no fun.

My Hopes
QB: Either Garcia makes that senior leap in talent that happens with some players, or Shaw improves and becomes our guys. Shaw would give us a great zone read option game.
HB: Carson, or Wilds, or some other freshman pushes Miles for playing time. Every team really needs three quality backs, since it’s such an injury prone position.
FB: Someone needs to put on twenty pounds of muscle to at least get to DiMarco’s weight. Cunningham definitely deserves a look if none of our current fullbacks can cut it.
TE: Not sure what to think here. Without seeing them play everyone looks as good as the next on paper. Cunningham did well this season in limited time, so I guess it’s probably his to lose. That Alvin Dupree dude from Georgia looked interesting, but Carolina didn’t offer him anything.
WR: Tanner McEvoy, the white Tori Gurley!! Just playin’ … maybe they’ll change their minds, though, and use him as a wide receiver. I can dream.
T: I hope Brandon Shell will push for immediate playing time. Second year dude Corey Robinson also looks like a physical specimen at tackle. I’m also interested in seeing what Kaleb Broome has to offer.
G: I really hope Watkins doesn’t leave. We don’t have enough guys in his weight range.
C: Not much should change here.
DT: I’d prefer to keep Ingram in a reserve role as a pass rusher, and Dukes, or somebody, fill in for Ajiboye.
DE: I hope this becomes the strongest position on the team, as it looks on paper. They may have Devin Taylor, Jadeveon Clowney, Chaz Sutton, Jerell Adams, and that Leon Mackey recruit looks interesting too.
OLB: Shaq attack is back. I hope he stays healthy this time. I wonder how much of a shot they have at that Cedrick Cooper recruit. That dude has enough speed to even play spur.
MLB: Paulk did decent this season, but I hope they give Townsend a look here. I think Townsend played running back too, so that gives him a good perspective on the position.
CB: Please somebody new come in and be awesome!!
S: Please somebody new come in and be awesome!!
Spur: Not much should change here.
KR/PR: Byrd, hopefully. I’d love for Sherman to improve, though. The blocking also needs to improve.
PK/P/KOS: Plenty of guys to choose from. I hope one or two can play. It’s hard to win games without a place kicker especially.
Overall, it’s tough to say whether Carolina will be better or worse than this past season. They may reinforce an already strong defensive line, but I wonder whether or not the secondary will improve. Perhaps the guys we have will play smarter, or some freshman/freshmen will spark the unit. FB may be in disarray, and who knows what will happen at quarterback. It’s tough to have an elite team if you’re quarterback position is in question. I’m also questioning the receiver position. If Garcia is the man, and he plays like this season, there cannot be hardly any dropped balls, ‘cause Garcia will miss a good share of throws as it is. Even if they get all the big name recruits left that they’re targeting — without watching the new guys play, and assuming no one regresses a lot or takes a huge leap in talent — I’d have to say it’s about the same team we had this season.
stuff 'bout stuff.
I forgot about Robinson. He's a good looking OT.
Also think you’re probably right about Ingram. He’s probably not big enough to be an every-down DT.

One more thing...
Right now, I’d say the four biggest issues regarding whether this team can improve next year are QB play, secondary play, OL play, and special teams. I’ll be writing individual posts on each of these points over the next few weeks, but a few quick thoughts are in order. 1, Garcia probably isn’t going to become a pinpoint passer at this point. His decision making and ability to run the read option may improve, though. But Shaw already runs the read well and will likely grow into himself in other regards in his second year. I like his chances to push Garcia. 2, the OL loses some key personnel but should improve in terms of fundamentals and scheme in its second year under Coach Elliott. We’ll just have to wait and see which of the two means more. 3, the secondary has the raw talent, especially as some of the younger guys develop to provide depth. Spurrier needs to spend a lot of time evaluating what decisions the defensive coaching staff has been making with these guys, because something is getting lost in translation. 4, we need a complete overhaul in special teams coaching. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like Spurrier wants to go that route.

Yeah, well, I'm not confident in Spurrier doing anything with the team outside of offense.
He may hire a different position coach, but he doesn’t seem like the type to get involved in areas other than his specialty. I imagine Ward or Johnson will say something like, “We think we have it fixed.” That will probably be enough for Spurrier.
I’m holding out hope for Shaw, but it’s not looking good. If Spurrier thought he was even near the same level as Garcia why didn’t he put him in during the bowl game? Also, wasn’t it Shaw that couldn’t decide between using a glove on his throwing hand or not? That doesn’t instill confidence in me, when a guy can’t even figure out what makes him comfortable enough to be a reserve quarterback behind a guy who is struggling.
stuff 'bout stuff.

Well...
You’re probably right about Spurrier, Ward, and Johnson. Spurrier certainly seems to want to be hands off with the defense, although he’s certainly been known to drop a poorly performing coach in the past. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens. As far as Shaw goes, I’m optimistic. I guess we can always wonder why Shaw never got many significant snaps after all the chatter about him during the off-season, but he looked good enough at times to make me think he’s got some potential. QBs oftentimes improve dramatically from their freshman to sophomore seasons, so let’s wait and see what happens. What we see with Garcia is what we’re probably going to get again next year, I’m afraid, so there’s a lot riding on Shaw.

Excellent
QB, RB, FB … total agreement.
TE … I know this sounds stupid, but I’ll ask it anyway: is there a chance to get Weslye Saunders back? Is he determined to enter the draft after sitting out last season? His draft standing will have plummeted. I know, I know .. dumb.
WR … Im happy with Jeffery, Sanders and Moore. We need to see if Byrd is the real deal. We cannot count on Alshon’s services in 2012.
OL … I am expecting more depth. I thought we had some guys pulling of redshirts next year. Shell will see pt as a true FR. The longer Sean Elliot works with this unit, and the more guys he brings in, the happier I will be.
DL, LBs … for the first time in living memory these are complete units, with depth. Recruits should add talent and speed.
DBs … proof will be in the pudding. Stephon Gilmore must find his freshman form.
Special teams … I’m with GM. More important than return men is finding a replacement for Lanning. We’ve definitely been spoiled with Succop and Lanning (aggravating as a few missed point-afters).
If 2011’s squad is similar to 2010’s, I would be ok with that if (a) we really work on special teams [i know – broken record] and (b) Coach Johnson and Coach Ward really work on the secondary. Improve those two areas, and everything else stays the same, then I think we compete again for another SEC East title. Whether the “East” is down matters zip to me. The biggest difference between 2011 and 2010 is that Ryan Mallet and Cam Newton will be gone. The best opposing QBs will be Murray and Bray – both prone to young QB mistakes – and MSU’s Relf, who is good but is no Newton.
Right now, I think we’re better than UGA and UT so playing them on the road doesn’t give me the hives like it used to – still tough outs but not impossible. We rotate Alabama off the schedule in favor of MSU which is a better match up for us. We get a depleted Auburn at home, a new Vandy offense, a blank slate in UF and UK breaking in a new QB. Arkansas on the road will be a very tough nut to crack. Clemson of 2011 wont be markedly better no matter who they bring in as OC (Dabo’d be smart to hire Miami’s Whipple) though their RB recruit may be the next Spiller .. .who knows?
I think we have a good team athlete wise as anybody not named Alabama, LSU or Florida … and our kids know they can play with them and beat them. The question is do our kids believe? If they do … and we improve Special Teams and Secondary … and we get measurable improvement from Garcia and Lattimore (which seems reasonable to expect – Lattimore is not even fully grown, and Garcia has to grow up one day) … then 2011 will be the best team we’ve ever fielded top-to-bottom.
They wore garnet helmets.
Indeed...
We cannot count on Alshon’s services in 2012.
In fact, I’d imagine he’s already got his 2012 draft papers in order… :) Let’s hope we make the most of his talent in 2011.

I firmly believe Shaw is going to win the job in the spring.
Paige's sparking personality is intoxicating; her beauty breathtaking; her intellectual prowess incomprehensible to mortals. Her radiance...her luster...drive men mad. Her omnipotence dangerous, yet alluring. It is her power that ensures gravity remains constant; her genius that inspires. She is not only responsible for the Earth's rotation, but may cure what ails the heart with a glance. I am Paige's pool boy...a serf to her ladyship. I am at her beck and call. I bow to her. I am not worthy. War Eagle.

One name I forgot--
LB Qua Gilchrist. He will compete for playing time at LB. We may not be as bad as I thought at LB if Townshend commits.
Garnet and Black Attack: A Blog By and For Gamecocks Fans.
Having seen him in person again yesterday, I will say Clowney will be your best defensive player from day one.
This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

Sounds good to me.
Having him and Taylor should give us one of the nation’s best pass rushes.

A couple of my thoughts...
-I would love to see Byrd at KR/PR. He has some very impressive high school tape in that respect and I think he could be our Jacoby Ford. We need someone to spark our special teams and he’s got a great shot at being the player to do it.
-As far as WRs go, don’t forget about Nick Jones, who redshirted this year. The staff is very high on him and I’ve heard his style of play compared to Kenny McKinley. I think he’ll be one to look out for in spring/fall practice.
-For kicking duties, I think Wooten and Scribner-Howard will handle kickoffs/FGs, and Patrick Fish will punt. If I remember correctly, Fish was a guy we picked up in 2009, so if he’s good enough to have a scholarship, I would assume he’d step in for Lanning in that area.
-At RB, I think Miles made a great case this weekend to be the #2 back next year, but Shon Carson (provided he goes to college and not the MLB) should compete for that spot as well and provide quality depth.
I also think Shaw could seriously challenge Garcia at this point for the starting job. Garcia has shown a lot of progress over the years, but it has been a kind of slow and laborious process. By no means am I throwing him under the bus, but I think we’ll have another QB controversy on our hands come spring.
Garcia has shown "a lot of progress?"
Apparently, I just don’t see what you’re seeing.

Well...
…when you consider the days when he was splitting time with Smelley and then his first season as a full-time starter, he performed MUCH better this year than he did either of those. That’s not to say he’s a top-tier QB now, but he did manage to clean up several aspects of his game. More often that not, he gave us the best chance to win.
The thing I find most concerning about Garcia is his tendency to fall apart if Lattimore isn’t in the game. He just seems like a different QB entirely when Lattimore isn’t there blocking or as a safety valve. I think he grew too reliant on Lattimore and Jeffery this year, and in some ways, he regressed as a result of that.
Is Barnes a RS junior?
I could have sworn he was a senior, but maybe he’s a junior.
Garnet and Black Attack: A Blog By and For Gamecocks Fans.
His profile says he got a medical redshirt in '07, and that he's a junior.
I was confused about that one, ‘cause I remember seeing he was a junior, but I didn’t know about it being his fourth year. I was going to say something, but I figured he wouldn’t factor into things much anyway, so I didn’t.

Yeah, he came in with Saunders, Matthews, etc.
You’re probably right that he won’t be a factor, but I guess it’s nice knowing he’s here.

I thought Barnes was going to be a whole lot better than he turned out when he committed.

Heck, he's had moments on the field.
Remember that awesome game he had against Ole Miss in 2008? I thought that was the beginning of big things for him. Alas.
Granted, it’s hard to say what our offense might be like if Garcia actually saw half of the open receivers not named Alshon. I imagine that a guy like Barnes might have a few more catches in that case.

You're probably right.
Another reason I pray Shaw grabs hold of the job.
As it stands now, if a ball goes to anyone not named Alshon I’m shocked.
