Video Game Offense!

This is the kind of offensive performance you see from somebody who’s used to playing NCAA 12 against the computer on Freshman, then jumps up to play some Mountain Dew drinking, recliner sitting, 15 year old troll on Heisman. And as I’m typing this the D is starting to struggle.

Some thoughts

The good:

We’re running quick no-huddle offensive plays (spread and even OPTION!), which is what we really need to do more often. We don’t have the line or the players to do pro-style formations all the time.

Great heads-up play by Justice Cunningham to catch that tipped ball on 3rd-7. Could easily have been an interception if he doesn’t get it.

Once again, good defense in the red zone.

The bad:

Penalties. We are murdering ourselves with penalties. They killed the first two drives before they started and then we nearly killed that one with a false start on 2nd down. Must stop this.

We’re still not using Damiere Byrd on spread plays.

HBC insists on calling throwing plays when we should be running it down their throats, which killed us on that last third down.

Special teams still sucks. If this is what Wooten is doing in practice, no wonder we aren’t kicking field goals.

We’ve had some really good things going on both offense and defense, but we’re killing ourselves with penalties and terrible special teams play, again.

Halftime.

My halftime thoughts are really more of the same. Less penalties for Carolina means that we’re able to get the offense going. Great job with the spread and quick plays. Shaw is a bit slow on reading the coverage and options, but at least he can do it, unlike Garcia. And he can run the ball well.

Play calling is much improved in the second quarter. The option out of an I-formation on 4th-and-inches was a beautiful piece of trickery.

I hope Dominique Easley is okay; that looked like a hard hit and he didn’t look good coming off the field. Concussion, maybe?

Halftime is also a good chance to recheck the Muschamp Intensity Meter! This may come in quite handy during the second half.

We have over twice as many yards as they do. This could very well be a 24-3 or 28-0 game if not for a few miscures on our part.

I predict a fun second half. Unless Florida does some things much differently, my impression is that we’re a much better team than they are.

Great kickoff strategy, too.

Very Impressed

I’ve like the strategy overall. I know we tried to pass a lot at the beginning, but I think Spurrier was trying to fake the passing game, in order to go back to the running game to score. I’m loving the kick-off strategy. I’m happy for him to catch the ball farther up, with no momentum. If these little guys aren’t moving, they are easy to tackle.

Bad third quarter.

Florida’s doing what’s really their only hope; pounding us with short passes. Aside from the near-sack on Brantley, defense didn’t do much to stop the Gators from marching down the field on their first 3Q drive. Defense stopped them in the red zone, again, but it would be nice if the defense could stop them before the red zone.

Three terrible play calls after that pass interference. Stop. Running. The. I.

The second Florida drive had better defense, but was saved, twice, by penalties on Carolina. The pass interference on Antonio Allen was questionable, but Jadeveon Clowney’s late hit on Brantley was just plain dumb. No reason for that one.

In the NFL, that hit on Shaw is a 15-yard penalty. In college, it’s completely ignored. There has to be a balance here somewhere.

Victory!

Defense started the fourth quarter off quite nicely; Melvin Ingram with a great sack on Brantley.

Losing Connor Shaw on that first down just killed the first offensive drive. Ellington couldn’t get anything there. Byrd ran the wrong way on third down; rookie mistake. Florida followed this up with some great offensive plays and quickly scored a touchdown.

South Carolina finally didn’t let a penalty on 1st and 10 kill their second drive; instead, they threw a huge deep ball to Ace Sanders. However, the Gamecocks stalled in the red zone by not running a zone-read offense. Jay Wooten finally got a short FG.

The defense allowed a lot of room for Rainey on Florida’s second drive, but managed to stuff the Gators early and forced a punt.

South Carolina was forced to chew up the clock on the last drive, which meant relying on a shaky offensive line. It started off well; they drew the Gators offsides on 3rd-and-2. The line did quite well the whole drive. South Carolina started playing the zone-read offense again, which helped allow them to punch through the Gators defense.

Florida got the ball back with 42 seconds left, but Brantley got sacked on his last attempt to get into the end zone.

South Carolina’s defense, overall, had a pretty good day. They need to figure out how to stop teams from reaching the red zone instead of stopping them in the red zone. The offense is still very shaky. Spurrier has got to get over himself and run the zone-read/spread/option offense full-time for the Gamecocks to win.
