South Carolina Beats Florida--Waiting to Exhale
Earlier this week, Aaron Murray said the following:
"South Carolina has never gone a season without losing at least three SEC games. So we’re like, ‘Hey just because we’re one behind them you never know what could happen.’ They could lose one, two, three."
Relying on history isn't always reliable, Aaron.

In summation....
What won us the game:
The Zone Read
Ace’s Willie Mays catch, leading to an important field goal
As always, the defense
What almost cost us the game:
Penalties
Chris Rainey’s legs
Abandoning the zone read in the 3rd quarter

That was a close one.
South Carolina did quite well when they ran a zone-read offense, either spread or option. Both touchdowns, a missed FG, and the final long drive came on a zone-read offense. Both three-and-outs and the FG came on standard offenses; the FG wouldn’t have happened without a fantastic deep pass. (We didn’t get a first down after that.) The HBC must use a zone-read offense full-time in order to win.
The option out of an I-formation on 4th-and-inches in the second quarter was a beautiful piece of trickery.
Great heads-up play by Justice Cunningham in the first quarter to catch a tipped ball on 3rd-7. It could easily have been an interception if he doesn’t get it. Brandon Wilds tore through Florida’s defense like tissue paper. He and Marcus Lattimore are going to be a scary double threat next year. Connor Shaw is still a bit slow on reading the coverage and his options, but at least he can do it, unlike Garcia. He was a playmaker today; he ran it in for both touchdowns and got a couple crucial first downs.
Alshon Jeffery today passed the late Kenny McKinley to become South Carolina’s new leader in all-time receiving yards.
Once again, good defense in the red zone. Florida, at least in the third quarter, went with their main hope – short passes. The defense was unable to stop Florida on that drive until they reached the red zone, and there were a few other drives where the defense had similar issues. It would be nice if the defense could stop opposing teams before reaching the red zone. That said, holding Florida to 12 points was a great day for the defense. There wasn’t much open and they had pressure on Brantley all day. The fumble to open the game was wonderful. Well done by all involved.
Penalties. Carolina is are murdering themselves with penalties. They killed the first two drives before they started and then nearly killed the third with a false start on 2nd down. The defense also screwed up; they saved Florida’s second third-quarter drive twice with a pass interference and a late hit on Brantley.
The special teams was improved from the Arkansas game, but still not fantastic. There were a couple shaky punts, and that missed field goal could have been a killer.
by BrotherFlounder on Nov 12, 2011 3:52 PM EST reply actions
Agreed on most counts, if not all.
I will say, I did see some excellent special teams play.
The sky-kick paid off, mostly kept UF starting around the 25 or so. Vic Hampton had some monster tackles.
On the other side, Bruce had a nice KO return, and Ace did as well as he could on PR duties. Scrib-How had a beautiful punt inside the 10, although one that wasn’t quite as nice.
Obviously an area where we need to continue to improve, but it wasn’t quite as disastrous as usual.

Aaron Murray
has never gone a season without losing to the Gamecocks. But he can still run his mouth about us.
So naturally he’s a great fit at the University of Georgia.

yeah

Hey Aaron
good luck running your mouth against LSU’s defense in Atlanta! Proud of the ‘cocks, still winning ugly, but winning. I for one am kinda glad we aren’t in the championship game, that would be more embarrassing than last year. With that little distraction out of the way, lets focus on the Citadel and the Tigers.
Murray's numbers were pretty good against you guys
As I recall. Mocking the leader of the offense that put up 42 on you seems misguided. Anyway, what was Murray supposed to tell a reporter about the dawgs resurgence after losing to you to start conference play? “Yeah, we had no hope at that point. We just kept playing because our schollies reunite us to. And now, mirabile dictu, mighty carolina (peace be upon them) gave us a present! We are humbled by their great act of magnanimity in dropping those 2 for us.”
This is has been a good year for both of our teams, and I think the east is better than people give it credit for. Or at least, Uga and USC are….

I agree that the East is better than people credit
The division looks bad in comparison to the West, but every collection of a half dozen teams would pale next to a division that contains three of the top six teams in the nation. The East could still be the #3 division in college football, behind the SEC-W and Pac 12-N.

We forced him to give up two critical
turnovers – one a pick 6; the other a game-winning fumble which was retuned for 6. That’s the side of Aaron Murray that rarely gets discussed – he’s brilliant until he isn’t. And he still hasn’t beaten us. So I hardly think he’s being mocked.
UGA players have been running their mouth all season, and, frankly, not only is it tiring but it shows a lack of leadership starting at the top (the head coach and the defensive coordinator).
Over the years, we’ve seen a parade of great UGA players who make this current crew look like whiny pikers – many of them have gone on to greatness in the NFL. None of them ever chirped as much as these guys (with the exception of Richard Seymour, who was from Columbia).
Murray may end up setting records in Athens, but for my money, comments like the one he gave make him reflect poorly in comparison to guys like Stafford, Greene, Bobo and Zeier.

give me a break
You didn’t lose 3 sec games this season. Congratulations. That’ll teach him to run his mouth about historical trends! And for the record, I find Spurrier amusing. But I don’t think I’d be criticizing coaches for letting players run their mouth when I employ the biggest talker in sec history. Why don’t you just stick to “webeatthemtheydidntplayarkansasblahblahblah”. At least that argument has some validity.

spurrier is proven and funny. murray is still figuring out where is ballsack is.

Gamecocks.
Spurrier is funny
What Murray said wasn’t. Mainly because it was a bland statement of fact in response.se to a question and not an attempt to slam anybody. But take it however you want.

Amusing
to me that fans from other schools, including this chap and Xon find it necessary to post in our blog. I know that it is not unusual, but I don’t do it and am curious if others in our blog do?
As the TRENDS change and reflect the new order of the east, people outside of Gamecock nation will find it difficult to accept. We are better than UGA, UT, UF and the rest of the east, and will be next year too. Accept it and get over it.
Go Cocks!

I'm generally an optimist...
…but that’s a bold statement claiming we’ll be better than UGA next year. The rest of the east, I could see. But UGA could be a force next year.

Interesting question
I think both defenses are about on par. We lose Ingram of course; they lose Boykin.
Unless Alshon Jeffrey can be convinced to stay (I don’t see how that will be likely), UGA will have the advantage in the WR Corps.
Despite my critique of Aaron Murray, he will be the best returning QB in the East bar none; unless Tanner McEvoy absolutely takes the QB1 position from Connor Shaw, then UGA will have an advantage in the passing game both throwing and receiving with Murray-to-Mitchell. I’m curious to see how quickly Shaq Roland breaks into the league, however.
Running back – Crowell is a talent and it looks like the Dawgs are poised to get another top RB for 2012. We hopefully will have Lattimore back; if we can create a downfield passing game, Lattimore and Wilds make a potent 1-2. We also get Shon Carson back, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we dont land a top RB ourselves for 2012.
I’m glad we play UGA at W-B. My thought is that next year’s UGA-USC game will be the last time we see Aaron – he will declare for the 2013 NFL draft.

trolling
is going to other blogs and writing something negative just to elicit a negative reaction. It doesn’t mean anyone who disagrees with something you said is a troll. You would be welcome at Dawg Sports under the same rules.
by Mark Mandingo on Nov 13, 2011 11:31 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Yeah, I don't see what the UGA fans are doing here as trolling. They're just stating their position.
Like I said, they’re welcome here as long as they keep it civil. I’ve always been treated kindly at Dawg Sports, despite the fact that I frequently say negative things about the Dawgs.

Yeah
but why would I want to visit a uga blog or any others could care less what they think in Athens. It is my opinion that people outside of Gamecock Nation that post in our blog, especially to write something negative is a troll. And I am not sure why I am responding to this.
Oh yeah, we beat you two years in a row. See you at the WB next year for another beatdown! Pulling for UK and then LSU, of course the game in the Atl will not be close.

You may not like this
but I’m a Tiger fan and I read this. I rarely comment, but I read it. I joined Shakin the Southland (STS) this year (the SBN equivalent to The Garnet and Black Attack). I read this blog and usually STS does a piece each week where the bloggers do a question and answer session regarding the opponent. IMHO, the SBN blogs are the best on the interwebz. I read them just to gain more Futbaw knowledge and to get an insight into how my team might perform against the opponent such that I can gamble my kids’ college money away on 4.5 point spreads.
Anway, let those Georgia douchebags comment all they want, you beat em fair and square, that’s tough for a Bulldog to take. And Aaron Murray is a little shit.
Ha!
I used to do interblog Q&A’s. Might have to dial up Figurefour for one of those this year. Those guys do great work over at the Clemson blog. They probably know more about football in their pinkies than I do total.

They do a good job. Maybe I don’t agree with their ranking philosophy, but yeah, good writing.

All I'm saying
is let Mr. Murray beat South Carolina before he starts jaw-jawing about historical trends; he doesn’t have the resume against us to talk smack.
Let’s also not forget that, to date, Mr. Murray is a mere 10-9 all time against BCS/Bowl opponents. Most of his big numbers come against cupcakes. Nothing wrong with that.
Against ranked opponents, he is 1-6 all time. The first win came last night. Congrats to Aaron. He should still shut up.
Trying to drag Spurrier into the conversation is a complete non sequitur. Spurrier owned the Dawgs through the 90s, so if you remember him talking smack back then, that’s probably the reason.
Here's a health, Carolina, forever to thee! UNIVERSITAS CAROLIN MERID. 1801 Emollit mores nec sinit esse feros (Ovid)
he talked last year
Spurrier still talks. I don’t mind it but don’t be hypocritical about it.

He teased Grantham a bit
Of course, Grantham might be a good D coordinator, but his shenanigans and big mouth have been a source of embarrasment to your program.
Oh, and he hasn’t beaten SC or Spurrier either.
There’s no hypocrisy in telling the plain truth. You continue to (purpoesfully?) miss my main point. Let Mr. Murray run his yap when he has the record to back it up. Ditto Todd Throat-Slash Grantham. Spurrier has the record. No hypocrisy. Capisci?
Here's a health, Carolina, forever to thee! UNIVERSITAS CAROLIN MERID. 1801 Emollit mores nec sinit esse feros (Ovid)
ok
If that’s your philosophy, I have no complaints. There’s logic to that. Just don’t complain about Clemson running their mouth and don’t run yours in a couple of weeks.
by Mark Mandingo on Nov 13, 2011 1:07 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Funny post from someone who earlier
denied he was a troll. Didn’t you say a troll was someone “writing something negative just to elicit a negative reaction”? Well bless your heart.
You should focus on the Yellow Jackets and leave worrying about Clemson to us.

You were having a civil debate?
where? Was “Just don’t complain about Clemson running their mouth and don’t run yours in a couple of weeks” civil? Or calling someone “butthurt”?
Maybe “civil” has a different meaning in the Trans-Savannah countryside, or the concrete jungle of Terminus. That would explain a great deal.
Here's a health, Carolina, forever to thee! UNIVERSITAS CAROLIN MERID. 1801 Emollit mores nec sinit esse feros (Ovid)
you layed out your philosophy
That because Spurrier owned UGA when he was at Fla, he earned the right to talk. I was simply mentioning that Clemson owns that same right with you. I’m just making sure you’re consistent. But whatever makes you feel better is ok with me. Good luck against Clemson, and I mean that.

"Mocking the leader of the offense that put up 42 on you seems misguided."
First of all, “mocking” is a stretch. Second of all, be reasonable. I’m sure a UGA fans everywhere are digging up quotes from week 3 about Richt’s hot-seat status, etc. It’s hindsight. Aaron Murray was wrong. People calling for Richt’s neck were wrong. We can revel in that fact today.
