SEC Power Poll Draft Ballot: Week Eleven
Let me know if you have any thoughts.
1. LSU Tigers
No surprises here. Will be interesting to see if Arkansas has anything for LSU.
I can't keep us above UGA any longer. They looked great yesterday; in fact, I think they looked perfectly capable of competing in the SEC Championship Game.
Gotta like Vandy's chances of becoming bowl-eligible against UT.

Absurd!
Placing UGA above us and competing against LSU. Will be glad to take the number on that one. LSU plays to the level of their opponent and they will crush Murray and the lowly dawgs!
We beat UGA, at their place. Don’t care if it was at the beginning of the year. Beating NMSU and Auburn at home is not a portend of what will happen in the atl. Again, LSU will crush them.
@Wilmy
You believe that SC should still be above Georgia, but support it by reference to LSU. We’re mostly homers here, but your analysis does not support your conclusion. Even Spurrier said Georgia was the better team after your win.

Woodcock, I have to agree with the UGA rabblerouser.
This poll is a snapshot. Hard to imagine we beat UGA today.

Not sure why clowns come to visit. This idea of posting on others blogs is juvenile and an attempt to draw out negative responses.
Again, correct me if I am wrong, we beat you and on your home turf. Next year we will beat you on ours, see you then. And yes, LSU will destroy Murry can’t wait to see that sack party.

What does LSU have to do with this conversation at all?
You feel insulted by Gamecock Man’s ranking and you resort to “well, they’ll get theirs from LSU in two weeks”? Do you think if he ranked South Carolina above UGA they would somehow not get slaughtered either? Sorry, but that logic just reeks of Georgia Tech fan-itis re:their inferiority complex about Georgia (i.e. we can’t beat ‘em so we’ll make ourselves feel better about it by predicting that they’ll lose to everybody else).
Look, nothing is going to change what happened in Athens in September. South Carolina won that fair and square. The point of this Power Poll is to rank who is playing the best football right now with a mix of resume to date. Well, right now Georgia has one less conference loss than Carolina and just beat Auburn by a larger margin than the mighty LSU you speak of. Against common opponents, it’s pretty much a wash (Carolina took care of Vandy soundly, Georgia struggled; both played about the same against Florida and Tennessee; Georgia completely dominated a MSU team that Carolina needed a late 4th quarter TD to squeak by; Georgia just took the team that beat Carolina at home to the woodshed). So other than a 3 point game in the second week of the season, what evidence do you have that makes GM’s ranking wrong?
Look, I understand the emphasis of the head to head and I’m not trying to downplay the significance of that game, but let’s be real about this – Georgia has been playing better football as the year’s gone along and it’s not unreasonable (call me biased if you must, but I did say “not unreasonable” and not “certain”) to think that given another shot at Carolina, Georgia would probably win if it plays like it did on Saturday. All else equal, South Carolina has two conference losses, Georgia has one, and the team that gave South Carolina one of its conference losses was soundly defeated by Georgia on Saturday. Georgia’s only other loss was to a team that is still a consensus top 10 team with one loss, same as Carolina’s, FWIW. Ergo, it seems fair to me that GM would have Georgia ranked ahead of South Carolina for right now given the Auburn results until Georgia loses to Kentucky or LSU.

Yeah, that's my thinking behind the ranking. I take resume into account, but I'm more focused on how well the teams are playing at the moment. I think UGA is playing better right now and would likely beat Carolina on a neutral field.
I’m happy we got the win over you guys in September, but the teams are playing differently now. Back then, we had Lattimore and our offensive line didn’t suck. I think Shaw is better than 2011 Garcia and that Wilds has proven a good replacement for Lattimore, but the line still stinks. Georgia has gotten better as the season has progressed, on the other hand.
At any rate, ranking purely on resume, I would rank Carolina ahead of UGA. Based on power rankings, I like UGA more right now. It’s close, though, and if Carolina wins out and UGA gets curbstomped by LSU, I may switch them.

UGA has managed to avoid being bit as hard as some others by the injury bug, which speaks well for its (recently oft-maligned) coaching, strength & conditiioning staff.

45-42. You live in the hypothetical. We won. Get over it. When we are 10-2 and you get your ass whipped by LSU and are 10-3, the only question is where the bowl selection committee place the teams. Given, that we have a better winning percentage and beaten you, then we should attend a better bowl. And by the way, Georgia Tech is a much better school in a better location.

And besides, your point above was that South Carolina should still be above Georgia in the blog poll. The rest is huffing and puffing. We already know South Carolina beat Georgia, just as we already know that after that game Steve Spurrier said that Georgia was the better team.

Boy that area by Tech sure has its ups and downs....
The Georgia Tech Conference center on 5th Street and some of the stuff around the Biltmore Hotel are really nice, but then you always hear about people being robbed in Home Park. Still, seems like Tech is in a nicer part of town than Georgia State. I keep hoping that downtown will get more and more cleaned up and it doesn’t.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong.
South Carolina did beat Georgia. I looked it up.
Georgia might be a good team. They looked like one yesterday. However, that was their first impressive SEC performance since losing to Carolina. Their effort in the other five games would have come up far short against any of the top half of the West, or even a healthy Florida.
Best of luck to you in Atlanta. You’re going to need it.

I’m honestly not that pissed about missing out on the SECCG, because we’d more than likely end up in the same level of bowl game with or without a public flogging by LSU. Also, UGA has won the games that they’re supposed to, congrats.
HOWEVER, I’m not going to accept that the scoreboard bows to the standings. We beat UGA 45-42, and you can’t take that away from us, or strut around a USC thread “correcting” everybody.

As long as you live by that principle
that the scoreboard always trumps all other considerations, that there is no validity to more in-depth statistical analysis that shows that some times a superior team simply failed on a particular day, etc., then you can say.
Is that how you feel about the Auburn game? Or the 2009 game in Athens? Again, if your’e consistent to your principle then good for you. I disagree with the principle and think it’s blatantly nonsensical myself, but I appreciate your commitment to it.

Was Aaron Murray beating himself when Jadeveon Clowney slung him to the ground like a rag doll to let Melvin Ingram score the winning TD?
Or was it when Antonio Allen scored the pick-6? Or when UGA let Ingram score on the fake FG? Or let Stephon Gimore return a fumble to the 5 yard line?
Or let Marcus Lattimore run over them like a pig through slop in the fourth quarter when the game was on the line?
Did UGA beat itself? Or wet itself?
I’m thinking the latter.

Like Gwinnett said, check the scoreboard.
Wins are wins, and losses are losses. There’s no special category for losses that came due to turnovers. It’s still a loss. Deal with it, and be happy you won the division.

USC beat UGA. Don't you dare deny a team that beat us in our house the respect they are due.
I agree with the rankings above, but only because UGA has looked decidely more impressive in conference games than USC has. It takes a lot to overcome head-to-head results, and I would have a hard time arguing with someone who ranked the Gamecocks ahead.

There's Something to be Said
For swapping Arkie and UGA. UGA has a competent offense, not as prolific as Arkie, but a very stout defense. I want to avoid A>B>C arguments, but in my slightly biased mind Georgia looks better than Arkie.
by Hogbody Spradlin on Nov 13, 2011 2:04 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions
No, there's not. It isn't even close.
Georgia has played two really good games all year, and they lost one of those. Arkansas has looked much, much better over the course of the season.
Arkansas won their high profile OOC game. Georgia lost theirs.
Arkansas beat Carolina by two scores at home. Georgia lose to Carolina at home.
Arkansas made Tennessee look like a Sun Belt team. Georgia muddled through by one score.
Both teams demolished Auburn.

Congrats UGA, you won a division title because it’s a down year
by Spurriersvisor on Nov 13, 2011 2:52 PM EST up reply actions
Except that you Carolina won the East at 5 and freaking 3
the definition of a “down year” it seems to me. Georgia has gone 7-1 in the SEC. That pretty much means you’re good, no matter how “easy” your version of the SEC schedule turned out to be. Conference pride, people (but I still hate Florida)!
There's no argument for placing Georgia above Ark.
It’s not even close; the suggestion defies logic.
That said, congrats on your SEC East victory, and good luck in the championship game. I think you can make a game of it if you play like you did yesterday.

Against Auburn, Georgia played like a team that could go toe-to-toe with Arkansas. If they turn in two more performances like that, the CG could get very interesting.

I am really interested to see how LSU does with Arkansas.
Murray has developed raport with several freshman WRs (Bennett, Mitchell, Conley) that was lacking early in the year. LSU hasn’t yet faced a strong passing offense. Arkansas is certainly a more potent threat than UGA, but I’m hoping we learn something useful.

I have no problem with the ranking, GM.
What are we squabbling about, which team is crappier? There are a million arguments to be made or both sides, but the fact of the matter is GA is in line for the division. That puts them above us.
Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.
They're always supposed to beat us
Year in and year out, they’re always picked to kick our poor little butts. CMR has circled the game for two years now. We don’t have an answer to Murray. We can’t run with them. Oh, the humanity! Why do the Gamecocks even bother to show up? Don’t they know someone could get hurt? meh.
I’d say we beat them again even without Lattimore, Garcia and Nunn. I can’t explain why Aubie crapped the bed so spectacularly (but then it doesn’t matter much because I don’t much care for them either).
With all due respect to more sane Dawg posters like Audit, what happens against common opponents is irrelevant when you’ve beaten the other guy’s team on the field. UGA may win the division, but they’ll always know they’re the second best team in the East in 2011. We ran the division. They didn’t.
It’s a special form of Dawg-self-regard that lets them rationalize away their must-win loss to us, and then shower themselves accolades from their own lips, and crown themselves with oak-leaf crowns of their own making. But then that’s what makes the boys from Clarke County so much fun to keep around.

Beat UGA without Lattimore? do you need to go back and see how much total offense only he accounted for? No Lattimore, no win.

anyhow, Brandon Wilds has been playing a great deal like Lattimore. I honestly still would like our chances.
Here's a health, Carolina, forever to thee! UNIVERSITAS CAROLIN MERID. 1801 Emollit mores nec sinit esse feros (Ovid)
Not saying it would not be possible
I only was acknowledging how much Lattimore is a factor for the offense when he is playing and is not.
UGA did shoot themselves in the foot quite a bit in the game against you guys
poor special teams play, the O-line was leaking like a sieve. No excuses though, Clowney and Ingram are serious ballers and Lattimore got his on offense. So congrats on a win. Most UGA fans do not count SC as a win as some here think, We know that game normally has early conference implications in it so it is essientially a early playoff game for the both of us so to speak.
For the record, the East is not won yet.
Yes, in all likelihood it is over, but if the Saints can lose to the Rams, GA can lose to KY…if a lot of crazy shiet happens, lol.
Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.
Yeah, and Kentucky has been known to spring an upset on UGA.
