Providence 76 South Carolina 67
The Providence Friars continued their unrelenting domination of the Gamecocks, dating back to Rick Barnes' pre-Clemson days. It's fortunate Providence doesn't field a football team, or we'd be in serious trouble Sure! - Vegas had installed us as the favorite! And, sure! - we had Bruce Ellington back. But it wasn't meant to be. Woe.
I didn't get a chance to watch the game, but the box score tells the tale .... Malik Cooke had 21; Eric Smith had a nice night at 16 ... no other Gamecock scored in double-digists. The Cocks inexplicable over-reliance on the tre continues to haunt us ... 6 for 30 (20%) .... our overall shot percentage was a woeful 36% (26 of 72). Damien Leonard went 0-5 from the arc in his nine (9) minutes.. Bruce Ellington looks like he fit right in -- 3 of 11 overall, and 0-4 from three-point range.
We never led after the opening minutes. Bright spot - we out-rebounded the Friars - both overall 36-30 and offensive rebounds 18:7. We went 9 for 10 from the stripe.

The worst part...
…is that Providence tried to give the game away several times, and we just weren’t good enough to take advantage of their mental lapses. We had success feeding the post, but then inexplicably wandered away from it and decided to live and die by the three — and as you can see, we just died by it.
Other thoughts: Bruce looked rusty, but not terrible; I think he’ll get back to game speed soon. I was disappointed by Slawson’s play, seeing as he had a monster game against UNC, but was really, really off tonight — he missed three dunks and two putbacks. I swear, the most infuriating aspect of this team is its inability to finish around the basket and get those easy buckets.
Also, both Richardson and Leonard had horrible shooting nights, which really killed us. We can usually make do if just one of them is on, but three-point shooting was an unmitigated disaster. However, to Richardson’s credit, he did a fair amount of driving and slashing to the basket when he saw his shot wasn’t falling. I like his aggression in the lane, so hopefully he’ll utilize that more.
Anyway, it’s tough to be a hoops fan right now. You’d think we’d be out of our shooting slump after two years and roster turnover…
Yeah, I didn't think Bruce looked bad, considering that he was catching TD passes this past Friday.
Give him a couple of weeks.
Yeah, we missed a bunch of dunks in this game. We seem to miss a lot of stuff around the basket.
Did like that our guards are attacking the basket a bit. That’s what they should be doing when the shots aren’t falling.
