Bruce Ellington's Scholarship
If he plays football and basketball does his scholarship count against both teams?
Interesting. I wonder if there’s a way to work it out in the opposite direction if Ellington does return. I’ve got to imagine that the results of a poll (either a simple average or a weighted average by yearly donations to the school) would show that fans/alumni/students would prefer to preserve the scholarship for the football team
I'm assuming it's a stupid NCAA thing.
They rarely pass up an opportunity to make it more difficult to manage a major college football program.
Sure. I suppose the universities can’t complain about the overall state of things; in exchange for the NCAA acting as a cartel, a sort of anti-labor-union, to grant universities access to labor at a below-market cost these universities can certainly afford to deal with the NCAA’s myriad asinine rules.
As I understand it,
Bear Bryant used to overload his football roster by having Alabama put all his athletes on scholarship for track & field. Thus, if a student-athlete is on scholarship for two sports and one of them is football the scholarship counts toward football.

Yeah, this rule is known of as the "Bear Bryant rule" for precisely this reason.
