South Carolina Gamecocks to Play Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Capital One Bowl

Gyi0062076097

South Carolina has been invited to play the Nebraska Cornhuskers in this year's Capital One Bowl. The Bowl will take place on January 2, 2012 at 1:00 PM ET in Orlando, Florida.

I'll have a lot more to say over the next couple of weeks about the storylines and matchups in this game, but suffice it to say that this is a dream scenario for the Gamecocks. Here are just a few of the things to be happy about:

--After years of getting hosed on bowls selections, this time we were the ones who got the favorable bid, getting a bid in the prestigious Capital One Bowl even though one of the other possibilities beat us head-to-head and the other one won our division.

--Indeed, this is the best bid we've ever gotten.

--The matchup with Nebraska is a favorable one. Nebraska will give us a tough test, but they're a beatable team that we matchup well with. A win will give us our first top-10 finish in school history, as well as a high-profile win over a storied program.

--The bowl should have some fun storylines, including Steve Spurrier's chance to avenge his embarrassing loss to the Huskers in the 1995 national title game.

--The bowl has a nice payout of 4.6 million.

I know there's a lot of angst right now over how some of mediocre teams made BCS bowls due to questionable rules, but the rules being what they are, this selection is about as good as it gets for Carolina. I'm extremely excited about this game, and you should be, too.

I'll have a lot more to say about Nebraska over the next few days. In the meantime, I'd encourage you to visit SB Nation's Nebraska affiliate Corn Nation.

as a fan of the little guys as well – i am so mad that va tech got the bid over boise. it really frustrates me. poor kellen moore had a great career just ruined by kickers. on a more important note. cant wait for this bowl!

Husker fan here

I have to say that this game is one of the few bright spots on a night that generally has me seething with how a lot of the bowls shook out. I look forward to learning more about you guys and talking football over the next month!

Either you dislike us alot

Or someone’s mascot needs to be murdered by an opposing fan because I sense a lack of hatred here. :)

A very generic announcement.

This seems like a fine matchup, as the (INSERT BOWL NAME HERE) is a great location to play a football game and the payout ain’t half bad either.
The team we are playing is a very prestigious one, as the (INSERT OPPONENTS NAME HERE) have a long solid history of greatness and achievements in their conference, the (INSERT CONFERENCE NAME HERE).

We are very happy to accept this bowl invite and the (INSERT BOWL NAME HERE) is happy to have us and the (INSERT OPPONENTS NAME HERE) play in their bowl.

So everyone set your calenders for the (INSERT DATE OF BOWL GAME HERE) and get ready for some football!

Hey Guys

Husker fan here, great game upcoming with you guys! It’ll be nice playing an awesome team, and perhaps reliving memories of Spurrier throwing his vizor! Just kidding, just hoping for a competitive game with from everything i’ve read a very classy fanbase! See you in Orlando!

Definitely. The CWS is Omaha's favorite sporting event (after Husker football).

You guys have won the last two, correct, 2010 & 2011? They have a nice ballpark there now, though the flooding there this past year was nasty.

I.M. Hipp

Tom Osborne has always been one of my favorite people and coaches. He is one of the classiest people in collegiate sports and he is missed on the sidelines, showing my age. Look forward to a battle as your team will present some issues as our run defense is not a strong as our pass d, and we have issues with runs between the tackles. Maybe a month of preparation will take care of that. Good game and

Gooooo Cocks!

Hehe

Uga fans seem less than thrilled bout the Outback bowl. Glad we could sour the bookends of their season. Also this is cool to play Nebraska a former Big XII team. At least for me it is.

Love this time of year

Great bowl for us to get. I love getting to play a team that we so rarely see with so much tradition. Still wonder how we would’ve faired in the SEC title game

He’s got some other visits lined up too, though.

Husker in Germany here!

Should be a good matchup in Orlando – looking forward to watching it here on January 2nd!

Nebraska has always traveled well to Florida so don’t be surprised at how many N-wearing fanatics are running around – it is always a nice break from the long & cold winter back home.

I think we’ve only played you all just 3 times in the past, with the series in our favor but with you going for Win #11, and the Huskers going for #10, it is going to definitely be a game worth watching!

GBR!

Although previously Nebraska was in the Big XII, I think they might have some similarities to the Iowa Hawkeyes.

As far as the fanbase is concerned. A passionate group that really follows their team. And I look for some similarities. I really hope that the team shows up and gives Nebraska the respect they deserve. Looking forward to it.

Bowl Game Car Pool

Anyone driving to the Capital One Bowl? Want to split gas?

My buddy in Orlando got my ticket and I have a place to stay, but I’m trying to save the 300 on the flight down. My truck simply won’t make it and no one else I know is going. I’m a super easy going Carolina alum in the Greenville area, love football, and I’m used to driving long distances if you want a break, or you can just shove me in the back with a pillow. Either way I’m happy. I’m flexible on when and where we leave from.

Look forward

to a hard fought game! Of the possible SEC match-ups, this is the one I was hoping for. Respect! GBR!

Should be a fun game

Martinez and Shaw are very similar quarterbacks, although Shaw is definitely a better passer. I was kinda hoping Wisconsin would lose their championship and fall to play us because of the hidden storyline I noticed… Russell Wilson just set the record for consecutive games with a TD pass at 37. I did the math in my head and double checked. Who do y’all think the last team to keep him out of the end zone was? ;)
