I fell no pity for Giles

he left the program for selfish reasons, and now karma is catching up to him

by Gamecockrock on Jul 7, 2011 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

Well, I feel bad for him

he left for more p.t. and didn’t transfer to a team in our conference or on our schedule. I don’t think it’s selfish to see the handwriting on the wall that there will be very limited p.t. in a stable of RB’s that included Lattimore, Maddox, Miles and Baker. Unless I’m mistaken, I think he left with the coaching staff’s blessing. I think as we continue to improve, we’re going to be seeing this more and more like many of our competitors have to deal with (not that we haven’t dealt with it before – Kenny Irons’ to Auburn being the most notorious recent example – and we sure could have used Kenny in 05 and 06.

In my opinion, the Big East rule is moronic if Giles is barred from playing for Skip Holtz’s USF team even though he never played a down for the Cardinals or even wore a jLouisville jersey. But he will have close-to-home opportunities at UCF, Florida Atlantic or Florida International. I personally hope he shines and doesn’t look back negatively on his two seasons at Carolina.

its not like he had no talent

if he was willing to put forth the effort in the offseason and work for the spot, he coulda easily been Latti’s backup for 2-3 years.

by Gamecockrock on Jul 8, 2011 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

He probably didn't want to be a backup, and he wasn't even close to the backup spot locked up. The coaching staff clearly likes Miles more than they liked him.

If they liked him so much more than Miles, he would have beaten out Miles in his time here. Maybe he would have done so eventually, but even then, he probably wanted a shot at starter, and that wasn’t happening with Lattimore here.

I always thought Kenny was the more talented

of him and Giles. Not that it couldn’t change. But even if I am wrong, I am not sure I would agree that Giles would be the consensus back-up for 2011 and 2012. By all accounts, Baker might have out-performed Kenny in the spring.

no doubt IMO

Baker is the most talented of them all (only behind Latti in that category)… I remember the day he commited to us, one of the better days in my Gamecock life… but he has been injury prone, so I wouldnt put him above anyone on the depth chart.

More about Jarvis Giles

I was surfing a bit and this was some of what was said about Giles’ decision to transfer at the time.

His hometown paper reported that early p.t. was a big motivator in him committing to the Cocks .

From the SB Nation report, if you read between the lines it looks like Jarvis wasn’t putting on muscle weight or “getting” the offense which contribted to his limited carries in 2010. And, truth be told, he did look small out there. Maybe his growth spurt will hit later, but it wasn’t in time to help him at Carolina.

One blogger’s post from 9.22.10 sums up what I thought i.e., that we hoped Jarvis would do big things, but it wasn’t working out – especially when Latti exploded onto the scene.

I think the main thing that exonerates Jarvis of being un-faithful to USC is Coach Spurrier’s own words: ""In the situation he’s in, he wants to go play," Spurrier said. I encourage guys that enjoy college football — at some point, you see where you are — to transfer and go play. Jarvis wants to play, so we wish him the best." A href = “http://www.goupstate.com/article/20100922/NEWS/100929865/1088?Title=USC-notebook-Giles-leaving-Gamecocks”> link here . Travis Haney also reports the situation of Jarvis missing classes and “running backward.”

So would it have maybe been preferable he stayed and improved? Maybe. But would I trade any of the kids from the 2011 recruiting class (and we needed every schollie) to get him back? No. I think he’ll be happier and improve his craft at another school. I regret he picked Louisville if he really wanted to be at USF.

him wanting playing time is fine

but in this matter, I feel how you feel about the Krill thing… Giles commited to us and signed with us, I cant support people who decides to turn their backs on that promise (its an honor thing just as the Krill incident is to you)

I dont disrespect your opinion

but I’m going with the HBC on this one. Frankly, I think they wanted his scholarship, but handled it better than some, ahem, others have done at this university. Just my .02.

certainly the coaches and University

handled it well… I dont think any coaching staff or University likes it much when a player decides to transfer, even if they say they are fine with it. Means those days they spent roping him into the school successfully goes down the drain (which IMO has to hurt more than a guy who decides to sign elsewhere)

by Gamecockrock on Jul 8, 2011 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

On the other hand

sometimes 4 stars bust. It’s never pretty. Sometimes its the player’s fault. Sometimes its the coaching staff’s fault. Sometimes it is nobody’s fault.

The easiest thing in that circumstance is for the young man to move along and for both sides to be as gracious as possible.

I think we may have to agree to disagree, but I think that is what happened here. Jarvis was a 4 star bust, not a turncoat. Spurrier isnt sweetness and light when he feels he has been let down, as we know from the Stephen Flint episode .

In other news

I wonder how long it will take before Latti is placed on the watchlist for the Doak Walker.

by Gamecockrock on Jul 7, 2011 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

Since you ask

I’m thinking seven days (July 15) if this report is to be believed

Obviously he wasn’t on the original Doak Walker 2010 list released in August, 2010, but he did end up playing his way onto the finalist last year so I cannot imagine he will be left off this year.

to be more precise

he played his way on to the final candidate list (second link above), but was not one of the tree finalists: John Clay (Jr.), Wisconsin; Kendall Hunter (Sr.), Oklahoma State; LaMichael James (So.), Oregon [recipient].

more additions to the watchlist

Johnson and Watkins are up for the Outland Trophy (best interior lineman) and Gilmore and Taylor are up for the Nagurski Award (best defensive player). I would expect Johnson to be a serious threat to win the Outland and Taylor and gilmore both could be finalists for Nagurski with good seasons for them

by Gamecockrock on Jul 8, 2011 11:25 AM EDT reply actions

yep

yet another sign of progress. People can say we won the SEC East last year because the East was down, but what they dont realize is, we had a team with the talent that probably would have won it even if it wasnt down, for the most part we handled the East teams we played, and was 1 of only 2 teams that beat a West Division opponent last year (I think it was just us and one other, may have been 2 other teams)

Too bad JBjr threw away the 2011 final-out ball

Travis Haney: State Museum to feature Gamecock baseball items

As for the 2010 ball, I’m still not 100% convinced UCLA outfielder Steve Krill (who picked it up after Merrifield’s hit in a fit of childish pique) is telling the truth.

One of the first stories about the lost ball was published July 4, 2010 by World-Herald sportswriter Steven Pivovar in which it was speculated that Steve Krill had picked up the ball. A UCLA sports information official was reported as saying he didnt think Krill had the ball, but that he would ask him directly.

Two weeks later, in Pivovar’s July 17, 2010 follow-up story Krill was quoted as saying that he would give the ball to the NCAA or CWS if asked, but that he had talked about giving it to a “buddy” who was going to be attending USC. Krill admitted that the “buddy” had mercenary motives: "I was talking with a high school buddy who just happens to go to school now at South Carolina,’’ Krill said. "He was thinking that maybe he could sell it to the athletic department there and maybe get some of his school paid for.’’

Just last month, however, Krill told the LA Times (in a widely-distributed article) that he gave the ball to his USC friend – purportedly " instructing him last summer to give it to its rightful owners." The article says both UCLA and the NCAA pressed Krill about returning the ball – which means Krill lied when he told Pivovar that he’d give it back if asked .

If the LA Times article is correct, Krill gave the ball to this doofus “friend” who has already called the USC athletic department. If true, USC should release his name and sue for the ball on general principle. The article makes it clear that all 2010 CWS teams were told that the ball was the property of the NCAA.

Krill is a dishonorable shmuck and probably a liar to boot since he knew his “friend” wanted to ransom the ball. Either Krill still has it and this whole “friend” thing is total b.s., or he needs to get it back from his friend (or at least tell us his name) As for the “buddy” – I think GM was correct when he called him a douchebag. I think its time his name gets released.

Sure – it’s a small matter. But when honor is concerned even small matters are important. Krill doesnt appear to have much honor, if any, which you would expect from a Division I athlete at a top school like UCLA.

Krill’s “friend” – if he exists or is a USC student – has the honor of a common criminal.

I wouldnt be surprised if Fuller and Harris got together and decided on USC together, and Harris jumps into the decision with Fuller at the last second. Sounds kinda like thats a possibility with how Harris’ camp has played it today.

I hope that its just to pick up Nike swag and take a nice break from the southeastern heat and humidity. I hope they’re not actually thinking of pledging to UofO (I hope Nosovitch isnt either).

I dont think so

Gcockcentral reports that its a Nike sponsored event, Oregon has nothing to do with it… besides, I dont think you will see many guys from the southeast region going to oregon to play some ball when we got the premier stuff in driving distance of their hometowns.

by Gamecockrock on Jul 8, 2011 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Seems like a ton of top-notch recruits from all over the country flirt with Oregon every year,

but none of them ever commit. Oregon is pretty much a long way from everywhere else in the country. Plus, you may get some Nike swag, but you also have to wear those butt-ugly uniforms.
