SEC Power Poll Ballot: Week Two Draft

I'm going to try something different with the SEC Power Poll this week. This post is a draft, and I'd like you to tell me about anything you disagree with. I'll take your comments into consideration when I cast my final ballot.

1. LSU Tigers

I'm now buying the arguments that the Tigers are better than the Tide, particularly after Alabama was somewhat underwhelming against Penn St.

2. Alabama Crimson Tide

3. Arkansas Razorbacks

4. South Carolina Gamecocks

5. Auburn Tigers

This week's most-improved team. The defense remains suspect, but the offense is good enough to keep them in any game. Could somebody hire Gus Malzahn away from the SEC already?

6. Tennessee Volunteers

7. Florida Gators

Hard to know what to think about this team, considering the opponents its played.

8. Mississippi St. Bulldogs

9. Georgia Bulldogs

10. Vanderbilt Commodores

Don't look now, but Vandy is 2-0 and just beat UConn. James Franklin definitely has this team headed in the right direction. I'm honestly tempted to put them above MSU and Georgia, but I feel that may be premature.

11. Mississippi Rebels

12. Kentucky Wildcats

I kind of thought that Central Michigan might pull off the upset in this one. The 'Cats got the win, but they're still underwhelming.

I have no love lost for Bama

but both this year and last, I’ve gotten the distinct impression that Saban has managed the Penn State game in such a way that he gets the Tide a 10+ point win, but just holds his foot off the gas enough to make it look halfway respectable. It’s almost as if Saban doesn’t want to show up JoePa.

LSU and Bama are clearly the class of the league. Arkansas is swallowing its cupcakes whole, but the injuries are piling up.

Barrett Trotter’s QB play has me rethinking Auburn. I was very dismissive of them last weekend after their abysmal startt against Utah State and if you’d asked me earlier this week, I’d have said Clemson would spank them. Now I’m definitely not so sure – i’d be surprised if Aubie drops to Clemson after CU’s last two sloppy wins.

I honestly dont know where to put us.

If it were me,

I’d jump Florida to #4 and move MSU ahead of Tennessee to #7. Beating Montana and Cincinnati doesn’t garner much respect in my book. I might even move UGA ahead of the Volunteers. Otherwise, it looks good to me.

You'd have Florida ahead of us? Why?

Based on your logic, Florida has done no more than Tennessee to dispel preseason expectations, so I don’t see why you would place them ahead of us.

I'm not ranking striclty on resume.

I’m ranking based on which teams I think are intrinsically better. Resume only accounts for a slice of my haphazard evaluation.

Florida has a ton of talent, and I think last year was an aberration. Weiss and Muschamp have both proven successful on their respective sides of the ball. I’ve been saying all Summer that I think the SEC East will come down to USC and Florida. I’m just putting two and two together here. Good players + good coaches = good team.

Maybe I'd put Florida right below us upon further thought.

I’m still pretty upset about how poorly we played against UGA.

That makes sense. Based on what we've seen so far, you may be right that Florida is our main competition for the East.

However, I’m still very skeptical of their offense. Weiss is a great offensive coach, but this is still John Brantley we’re talking about here. I want to see how Brantley does against a good defense before I get too worried about the Gators. So far, they’ve been playing crappy teams that they can run the ball all over.
