SEC Power Poll Ballot: Week One
As you know, I vote in the SEC Power Poll, which is hosted at Team Speed Kills. This is my ballot for this week. Next week, I'm planning to open this up to community participation and do this a bit more collaboratively; I'm traveling today, so I don't have time for that this week. Quick note, since I don't have time today to provide rationales: I don't so much vote on resume as simply on my sense of who would perform best at a neutral site. Hence, Alabama outranks LSU and MSU the same with South Carolina because I see the Tide and Western Dawgs as better teams in both cases--for now.
2. LSU Tigers
10. Auburn Tigers

Hmmmm
I think LSU should be number one after beating Oregon on a neutral site with their back-up QB. so I’d switch Bama and LSU as 1 and 2. Right now, their meeting on 11.5.11 is shaping up to be one the greatest games of the season.
I won’t quibble over 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Mississippi State had a much easier C-USA opponent than we did, but we played sloppily. Arkie, UT and UF swallowed their cupcakes whole, so the jury is still out on them.
Auburn’s deserves to be in the bottom third based on getting manhandled in the trenches by a WAC cellar-dweller , but Trotter’s strong play, plus McCalebb and Dyer and great special teams puts them ahead of Ole Miss – which lost its top three RB to injury and played anemically against BYU – so i would flip 9 and 10.
’Dores and UK are correct at 11 and 12. I like Joker, but I want to beat the ’Cats like rented mules to pay-back for last season.

Great points. I can see the argument for LSU, for sure, but honestly I thought Alabama was better going in and expected LSU to beat Oregon. Not much changed there for me.
However, I hope you’ll weigh in again next week when I start doing this draft style.

I am also wondering about Oregon.
They may be building a reputation similar to Ohio State. Just seems like a team that doesn’t perform well against SEC teams in big games. Really with Trent Richardson and that solid Defense, Alabama is going to have to be beaten to lose it’s SEC #1.
But thankfully, they will play this year.

Oregon comes out terrible against good teams when there is a lull, such as season openers or bowls.

I agree with Tryptic.
LSU should be number one. They played a legitimate opponent, on a neutral site, surrounded by a lot of media hype, and offseason distractions. Alabama played Kent St. They should preform well. If Bama had any kinks, they weren’t shown because they were PLAYING KENT STATE.

The good thing about both of the tiebreakers:
They’ll be settled on the field.
USC at MSU, October 15.
LSU at Bama, November 5. (looks like that’ll be the CBS game, with us playing Arkansas that week.).

I don't mind that we are ranked after MSU. I didn't see their game, but they put up the numbers.
I don’t have any problem with the rankings. Every team above us deserves to be there, every team after us deserves to be there. My only issue is that LSU played a legitimate opponent that excels in their conference and it is a big time conference. I would say, and this is only my opinion, but the only SEC teams that played an ACTUAL opponent this weekend were LSU, Mississippi State, Sakerlina, Ole Miss, and Georgia. (yes i know auburn had its hands full and so did WKU, but i don’t think their opponents were as tough). I’m not saying that our place on the list should be moved. I just disagree with the assessment that since alabama blewout a team that was considerably weaker and did as they were supposed to, they should be ranked number one. LSU pounding a potential title contender (with NCAA’s investigation approval) on the other hand is worth the number one slot.
Plus, Alabama quarterback play was sloppy (4 INTs) and trent richardson didn’t amount to much… against a WEAKER OPPONENT. (yes… 3TDs, but he only had 37 yards on 13 carries.)
