Steve Spurrier's Weekly Press Conference Quotes | Gamecocks online
Spurrier had this to say about Connor Shaw:
He's fine. He saw what happened. We watched the tape. He could've done this and that. Obviously the two long balls were close (to Jason Barnes and Alshon Jeffery) ... some other plays he could've done better. He understands Stephen (Garcia) played a lot better than he did. That's the way it was. Connor played better than Stephen in the preseason. We opened it up and it worked its way out. We didn't say Connor would be the starter for the year. We said each would play a quarter and we'll go from there.

East Carolina Report Card | The Post and Courier
Can't say I agree with any of these grades except for the overall "C+." He gives the offense a "C" citing the fact that defense and special teams each scored 7 of the 56 points and the fact that they often had the short field. Then he turns around and gives the defense a "C" even though they, too, often had the short field. He gives special teams an "A" despite the punting situation and the muffed catches. The coaching might have been suspect, but it certainly didn't deserve an "F". I mean, we did win 56-37 for goodness' sake. More of the same from Andrew Miller if you ask me. Oh well.

I guess I should weigh in on the Maryland uniforms -- everyone else has. As you might have guessed, I hated them. But I didn't hate them because they were ugly. I hated them because they were such a poor execution of what could have been elegant and awesome. The Maryland flag is one of the coolest in the nation, but instead of paying a tasteful homage to the Maryland banner, Under Armour decided it had to beat us over the head with abrasive "EXTREMEness." Shame on Under Armour for being more Nike than Nike and shame on Maryland for letting them. (H/T: Campus Union)

Men's Soccer Suffers Loss At Clemson | Gamecocks Online
Mark Berson's squad is still winless three games into the season. Soccer can be a fickle game, and things are often not as bad as they seem, but we're getting close to sounding the alarm here. The team has enjoyed success against Clemson the past 4 years and even won Conference USA last year, but the Gamecocks have not really done much under Berson since the early 90s. Call it a sign of the times, but I expect more.

Sakerlina’s defense has been laughably poor so far, and they’re getting shredded by Dominique Davis.

Heh.
I don’t know how many times I’ve read the 37 points blamed on the defense. I expect this from UGA fans, but I’ve been hearing it from more national types, too. At least look at the box scores and drive charts, people

Yeah, it's embarrassing, but I saw similar recaps on ESPN, so take it for what it's worth.

It is a comment on how different teams are perceived differently
South Carolina gifts the ball four times – three deep in our own territory – to an ECU offense with a very talented senior quarterback – and suddenly our defense is questioned (and to be fair maybe some questions are warranted).
Alabama, by contrast, throws four interceptions — two on tipped passes that could or should have been caught – and coughs up a rushing fumble. All against a cupcake there just to collect a check. And everything is fine.
Had Bama played Oregon or Boise State and given four turn-overs, Bama loses the game.
Had Bama played ECU and give the Pirates three short fields, they would have been scored on.

I like Justin King
but I disliked this last video. Dislike is too anodyne. Hated. For all its strong production values, the video over-emphasizes Garcia to the detriment of Shaw. It’s a shame Shaw fumbled because he had engineered a really great first drive; but for a blown defensive pass interference no-call, he’d have led the Cocks to 7-0. But for Marcus’ non-fumble, who knows what the score would have been with Garcia entered the game, on schedule, at the start of the second?
Should we now rub it in Shaw’s face? Should we have triumphal music when Garcia entered the game at the start of the second … just like Spurrier told us would happen? We need Shaw to be confident and ready. Video like this isnt advancing the ball, IMHO.

I thought the same thing.
On another note, I’d like to see Justin King branch out a bit and try some different themes. The current, while cool, is a little bit played out. Let’s see something new.

Question for my fellow G'cock fans
The game wasn’t televised on the west coast, so I’m asking those of you who saw the game: was our defense that bad in allowing 37 pts? Or was East Carolina’s offense that good?

Defense was ok....not great...here are my excuses for the defense
1) ECU QB D. Davis is a very good qb in a system designed to get the ball out quickly. So the strength of our D (D-Line) was neutralized somewhat. That being said the DLine put good pressure on the QB, occasionally forcing some bad throws and even racked up an INT (Impressively done by Ingram)
2) ECU running attack was a non-factor. The Dline and Lbs did a fine job in that department
3) Gilmore got beat on 2 or 3 big play jump balls. This was surprising to us all because …well..you know…Gilmore is suppose to be an “revis-island” type guy.
4)Had starters & two deep secondary players out of the game. Not sure if we ran any dime coverage the whole game (we could have, I just don’t know).
5)ECU offense had 4 short fields and made excellent use of them
6)Had at least one dropped INT…right thru the ol hands
Thanks!
this helps out a lot. Despite all of his faults, I think Garcia gives us the best chance to win.
I watched the Georgia v Boise St. game, and I think we will match up well with them. GA’s D-line is battered and bruised; Lattimore should have a repeat of last year. Their secondary also got lit up as well. Looking fwd to this matchup. I hate Georgia!

Nothing against Athens, which is a GREAT college town.
It’s all about the UGA trolls that live in the Atlanta area. I actually like Kyle, AuditDawg, RedCrake and those guys over at DawgSports.
Every school in the South has em, the obnoxious I bought my shirt at wal-mart so I am a fan type. I happen to live in Atlanta and be surrounded by them. If I lived in Greenville, SC, I would probably feel the same way about Clempson.
- FOW
Of course, our .361 winning percentage against Clemson
is much better than the .238 winning percentage against UGA.
- FOW
Yes, this is it exactly.
Actually, in this space I don’t think you’re in the minority at all.

I gotcha.
It’s funny, when I see the UGA logo, I just don’t bristle the way I do when I see the Clemson, Tennessee, or Bama logo. They just don’t bother me as a fanbase, but again, I live in Charleston so I’m not surrounded by UGA fans the way I am by Clemson folks, who seem to flock down here en masse.

Re: Maryland Pride Uniforms
I read this article or post (not always sure what to call something written on a blog) from Grantland.com written by Michael Kruse. It’s a good read.
How does Oregon Football keep winning? Is it the uniforms?
I thought this was a good read. While it adds some fancy language to something that was already apparent, it adds the magnitude of what Oregon did. It was inevitable that Under Armour would do more of the same at its founder’s alma mater. The difference for me is that Oregon gets a pass from me because they are that one team with the crazy and numerous uniforms. I don’t know why the obvious move by Maryland would upset me but it kinda does, because it doesn’t fit.
Just think, we’re starting to get used to Oregon’s uniforms and they have been at it for more that 10 years.
