Kornblut: Meanwhile, it looks like coveted Atlanta RB Mike Davis is planning to push back his announcement to NSD; I think he is waiting to see whether Tarboro, North Carolina RB Todd Gurley chooses UGA, UNC or Clemson, before Davis makes his move; the news on Gaffney WR Quinshard Davis is that Coach Shawn Elliot has confirmed he has a "commitable offer - i.e., no gray-shirt.

ESPN: Mark Schlabach gives us his 2012 Way-Too-Early Top 25. I'm not offended that he puts South Carolina as # 10, or UGA as # 6 (I always like the Peach State Pups to be ranked ahead of us at the beginning of the year - it gives them a nice sense of entitlement and complacency) but I'm surprised he puts the Razorbacks at # 14 with Wilson and Davis returning. Southern Cal at # 2 is silly; Clemmy looks like a solid # 22.

National Football Authority: 2012 NFL Mock Draft: South Carolina Gamecocks WR Alshon Jeffery Might be a Boom or Bust Pick (Video) . A bit stale from Monday, but CBS Draft Guru Rob Rang can go pound sand when he says that Alshon is "overrated".

Basketball

The State: Vanderbilt shoots down USC effort. Twelve first half points - 12. Count 'em: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. That's it. 19.2% shooting in the half. 0-from-8 from the arc. Don't let the final score fool you; the 'Dores were leading by 24 with four minutes left, and we were able to get the lead down to 10 when it was already all but academic. More to come on this game later, of course.

Way to early rankings

Shows how far the program has come with an early number 10 given all the losses on defense. Who is going to step up an be the leaders on d, that is a huge question. And as I have said before, don’t think Lattimore will return to form until late in the season.
ESPN ranks uga sixth in large part due to their EASY schedule. Imagine that.

Personally, I'd put us at 15

and see how September goes. If we’re undefeated at the end of the UGA game, then I’d say we were a legit top 10 team.

Knee injuries are tricky

Sometimes backs come back strong in 8-10 months, but it seems more often than not it’s the second year that they get back to full strength. USC’s lack of detail regarding the injury makes me think there was significant damage, which tempers my hopes for what kind of shape 21 will be in come the 2012 season.

The good news is we’ve proven we can win without him. But it sure would be sweeter with him.

Not just a physical recovery

Many backs do not recover from major knee surgury within a year, he may and I am hoping but not counting on it. He has to be sure the knee will be able to make the cuts, stops and starts that a healthy knee can make and most of that is mental.

Just an aside, I think that we may have seen the last of AP for the Vikes, or at least like we remember him, knees are a bitch.

Evidently, we might get some good news with Mike Davis.

Based on nothing more than some intriguing intra-recruit tweeting, there is reason to believe the touted RB may soon be a Gamecock commit.

Mike Davis retweeted, and has been tweeting with Kyle Fleetwood (fleetdafufu) and Rico McWilliams (20Rack). Both are commits and Fleetwood is a HS teammate, I believe. They’re all visiting this weekend.

Again, nothing’s certain but you have to feel pretty good about Davis at this juncture.

It would make a lot of sense

While Clemson is still in the mix, my feeling is Davis is down to UGA and USC. Isaiah Crowell will be returning to the Dawgs one year older and wise, and the Athenians have already picked up Keith Marshall and may just steal another RB from the North State in Todd Gurley. Davis has said he is carefully looking at the depth chart … pretty much everyone thinks this (2012) will be Lattimore’s last year …. other than Carson and Wilds, it would Davis and Salley (who like Lattimore and Carson is recovering from ACL surgery).

With Lattimore, the HBC has finally shattered the myth he doesn’t run the ball – which was a lie if you followed Smith’s last year in Gainesville or Erictt Rhett’s career at UF); in fact, now he has to face the slur that over used Lattimore. I think Davis should commit to USC, but I think it all hinges on Gurley. Or at least hinges in large part on Gurley.

I don't think I agree with you on Davis.

He says that he has already made his decision, and yet his visit this weekend will be his first trip to Columbia. So either he’s made his decision without visiting the school or (more likely) he already knows he’s going elsewhere and just wants to rule us out.

Admittedly, the fact that two of his HS teammates are solidly committed to us makes the possibility of Davis making his mind up on Carolina sight unseen a little less out there, but at this point I’d be surprised if we get him.

My hunch: Tennessee. That’s the only OV he’s taken so far, and Graham was recruiting him for the Gamecocks.
