SEC Power Poll: Final Ballot

Final ballot. Quick deadline on this, so no time for draft, but let me know if you disagree with any of my picks, and why.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide

You all know that I was vehemently against the rematch, so I'm reluctant to make this pick, because part of me feels that Alabama should have never been there in the first place. However, it's hard to argue with the kind of dominance Alabama put on the field in the game, which clearly suggested that the original results may have been a fluke.

2. LSU Tigers

All of that said about Alabama, you still have to feel for LSU. Hung tough all season and then lost the title to a team they had already beaten. It should be recognized, though, that LSU might have lost to other teams, as well, with such poor line and QB play.

3. Arkansas Razorbacks

You have to feel for the Hogs. Another excellent season, but they're stuck in the same division as Alabama and LSU, with Auburn sure to pose a third challenge next year. Of course, I doubt anyone minds seeing Petrino squirm.

4. South Carolina Gamecocks

Unlike LSU and Arkansas, the Gamecocks can't complain. After years of mediocrity, Carolina appears to have finally broken through, with two-straight good seasons and continued good prospects in sight.

5. Georgia Bulldogs

The Outback Bowl summed up Georgia football--so close, yet so far. Dawgs fans will find consolation in the creampuff war known as their 2012 schedule.

6. Auburn Tigers

The Tigers ended 2012 with a win in the Chick-fil-A Bowl and started 2012 by hiring Brian Van Gorder. Not bad.

7. Florida Gators

Not impressed with their win over Ohio St. Mistake-filled game won by the less-crappy team.

8. Mississippi St. Bulldogs

Not the 2011 the Bulldogs envisioned at one point, but not a bad season. Things have been worse in Starkville.

9. Vanderbilt Commodores

Same as above. Maybe they didn't finish as well as they had hoped, but this isn't the same old Vandy.

10. Kentucky Wildcats

Next year is going to be do-or-die time for Joker. The luster of beating Tennessee will wear off once Big Blue realizes Tennessee sucks, which they probably already do.

11. Tennessee Volunteers

What red-blooded American isn't enjoying the Vols' travails?

12. Mississippi Rebels

Tough times for the Black Bears. The Hugh Freeze-thing seems to be a bit of a gimmick.

Can't argue

with this. South Carolina is where we should be until we can beat arky. What a year despite all of the distractions and drama. We are the true SEC East Champs!

Don’t agree with the Van Gorder as being a positive hire. Auburn is lacking, Chizik is a joke. One good year with Cam Newton and that’s it.

Disagree about Auburn.

Van Gorder is an SEC great with NFL experience. He would be a home-run hire for any team. They’ll also shell out huge cash for a good OC. Plus, Auburn is recruiting very well. They’re not about to catch ‘Bama, but they’ll be good. IMO, Chizik has exceeded expectations in all regards. Auburn wasn’t great this year, but they were solid, considering how much they lost from the year before. They also exceeded expectations in Chizik’s first year. In 2010, they won the National Title. If that’s the definition of a “joke,” I guess the joke’s on us.

You don't address the Cam Newton factor

Check his record without CN, mediocre. And the departures of Malzahn, Roof and Dwyer, leads me to believe that they know something we don’t about Chizik. We should have beat Au but did not and much of that was due to Garcia and Malzahn not Chizik. His first year was 2009 at 7-5. Just my opinion. Van Gorder sucks, he turned his back on us and the Atl turned their back on him, as they should have, he is not an NFL caliber dc.

Sorry, but VanGorder was dominant while at UGA. He didn't do so well in Atlanta, but Spurrier sucked in the NFL, too. Doesn't mean he's not a good college coach.

You’re also not providing proper context for Chizik’s records. In 2009, he inherited a bad team and exceeded expectations. In 2011, he had the youngest team in America and exceeded expectations. His 2011 team would have had a record comparable to our own if it had played in the SEC East.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but just because you don’t like someone doesn’t mean that person “sucks.” It’s important to give credit where credit is due.

Cam Newton?

The highest paid player in college player in America at the time for a reason. I don’t like or dislike Chizik. The record speaks for itself and I bet if you ask some wareagles about him you might get the same response.

Oh yeah,

Van Gorder still sucks and no I don’t take it the wrong way when we were snubbed by VG a few years back….

I don't like Van Gorder, either. He whipped our butts when he was at UGA and then he screwed us.

None of that means he’s not a good coach. I can’t stand Petrino, either, but the guy is a great coach.

Point Taken

Don’t like either, still good coaches yes. I would not equate Petrino and V.G. though. Petrino is in a class by himself.

Meant

Petrino is in a quitter and ahole class by himself.
VG is an interesting hire at AU, not sure Roof was the answer there as dc. AU has an uphill climb in that division with no drop off next year from LSU or Bama.

Think you nailed it

I don’t see how Bama isn’t # 1 when it so thoroughly dominated LSU in the BCSNCG. Both had equal opportunity to prepare for one another, and it was a neutral site.

I don't agree that it was such a clear cut #1 for Bama.

Yes, it was a dominating win that night, but as I think cocknfire put it, LSU is the only team who is able to say they beat the national champs. On top of which, LSU played all the common opponents similarly, and also destroyed GA in the SECCG. Bama went 12-1 and LSU went 13-1 and they both lost a game to each other.

Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.

Spot on

I agree all way, even your point about Bama. I too, had issue with them being there, which makes their win feel a tad tarnished, but so be it. That cld possibly be best c college D in loooong time, maybe ever. Yall had great season, save the Auburn hiccuup, & deserve the spot u have em n. I think yall will b right there as long as Hyman is there at least. But I do agree with comment above about Auburn. I am not sold on Chizik. I need to c them do it w?o Cam. We’ll soon see tho, they’ve got another good class coming in, but no Dyer.

Bama

has a better coach, LSU has a better team. The system is broken. Alabama should have never been in the title game. The 4 team playoff is coming.

Sal Sunseri

was a valuable and surprising pick for Dooley jr. He is picking up quality coaching assistiants to make up for his ineptiitude.

Caught You Again Wilmy

Your certainty and logical fallacies are gonna do you in friend.

First of all, you’re not the true SEC East champ. Remember those schedules were made out without the benefit of your 20/20 hindsight.

Second, your Georgia envy shows again. You pan Van Gorder and root for Sunseri. Which one is a proven college coordinator? Saying Van Gorder is a bad hire because Chizik is a bad coach is muddy thinking. Chizik is a sorry coach, but that doesn’t prove anything about Van Gorder.

BTW, I’m whispering: 1 thru 5 on Gamecock Man’s ballot are right.
