The Daily Feed: January 16, 2012
Pretty slim pickings today, folks.
Lady Gamecocks
The State: Wildcat takeaway: UK spoils USC's upset bid.
Gamecock Anthem: #9 Kentucky tops #24 South Carolina, 66-58. David Porter does one of the best jobs covering the Lady Gamecocks.
Gamecock Baseball
Cocky Country: Backup Shortstop Tanner Lovick Arrested, Suspended . This is in The State as well. Bad break for Tanner.
Gamecock Basketball
LOHD: Flounder posts South Carolina Loses to Florida: Three Things Learned.
Gamecock Football
Kornblut: English reconfirms commitment to USC. Also, Davis not sure about more visits.
Bleacher Report: Who's Replacing Alshon Jeffery? Flounder is all over the net!
Loose Feed
Tulsa World: On the Clemson search for a new D.C. sources in the Sooner State say Brent Venables has not taken the job .. at least yet - Venables report premature; Swinney still interviewing. Not sure if this means anything.
CBS Sports: Ouch! Coach swap: Tide hires Vols' Thompson as LB coach. Dooley steals Sunseri. Saban steals Thompson to replace Sunseri. It's probably not that big a deal, since Sunseri might have his own ideas about the position coaches under him, except this is like the fifth sixth coach to bail on Dooley in as many weeks.
NBC Sports: Latest on the Harvey Updyke prosecution. It's like a perpetual train wreck.
Gainesville Sun: Muschamp: Play-calling tougher in SEC. Ya think?

I don't think Davis is interested in Clemson. I just think he's getting pressure from family to visit and doesn't want to upset them.
In addition to wanting to play for us, I’ve heard that Davis likes the urban environment and wants to be in Columbia as opposed to somewhere like Clemson.
That said, there’s always a chance when a kid takes a visit.

somewhere like Clemson
You mean a university in the middle of a cow pasture?
Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.
Yes, more or less.
Snark aside, some kids like that atmosphere, which is fair enough. But some like a more urban setting like Columbia.

Triple Option??
http://southcarolina.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1318958
Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.
I have to admit I’ve given this type of offense some thought in wondering if it could work. Sure, triple option teams are tough to beat. But they are also easy to beat with a disciplined defense. There is a reason why the best triple option teams don’t go all the way. Shaw will be a better passer this year, and we have a near 5 star Freshman receiver and a few other explosive options. We can work them in rather slowly, but I gotta think we have to stick with the zone read.
Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.
Not going to happen.
Nor should it. The triple option isn’t all that hard for a disciplined, talented defense to stop. Moreover, I disagree with Cloninger that the passing game will be worse next year. Pass protection will be better, and I disagree that we don’t have receiving talent. Sure, Jeffery is a great, but we’ve still got tons of talent at receiver and TE.
The truth is that the modern triple-option is a gimmick offense used by teams with inferior talent that hope to neutralize the talent gap. More talented teams are better served with modern offenses. We need to commit to the run next year, but we don’t need to completely change our philosophy.

I think we should have a few option plays in our repertoire
(and we have in the past) but it would be a terrible mistake to install a true triple option, plus the HBC would never in a million years be an option guy.
I agree it’s a gimmick offense .. and you limit the kinds of recruits you can get … it makes it very tough to get top OL and WR.

Oh, yeah, for sure. I like the ocassional option play, and I love Spurrier's incorporation of the zone read.
But you’re right on the other point. It should also be noted that whereas Cloninger seems to think that WRs like Sanders and Byrd would be great assets in a triple option, those guys would have never come to USC if we ran the offense.

Yeah, I can’t understand why an apparently intelligent writer would not even suggest, URGE the HBC to install the triple option as the best path forward.
Braves.
Falcons.
Gamecocks.
Cloninger is a bit of an iconoclast.
He’s just trying to spark discussion.

It should be noted, though, that I think his underlying premise is right: This team should embrace a rush-first offensive identity.

How about running a Pats-style two TE offense
I could get behind that. It will completely open up a ground game for No. 21 as well as downfield passing lanes for the wide-outs.
