If you look at the video, it appears that we have both Shaq and Jimmy on the weak side of the play (where the throw ends up). See here, at 48 seconds:
But remember what we learned from our post-game interviews - Ward went man on this play because he thought Vandy would run the ball, and thought that game the Gamecocks the best chance to stop the run. And yet, when we look at the top of the screen, we see both Wilson and Legree. So, did Ward play Legree as a rover on this play?
Unlikely. If you go to SECSports.com (I'm sorry, but I can't figure out how to link or embed this play, can someone please help?) you will see Legree begin to move with the motion player, but then stay on the weak side. This leaves #80 on Vanderbilt wide open at the bottom of the screen. The play works because Jordan Rodgers doesn't read the defense, but commits to making one throw before the play starts.
A breakdown in coverage on Legree's part, but because of Wilson (and Rodgers), a turning point play for the Gamecocks, and a crisis averted.
(Seriously, anyone know how to embed SECSports.com video? Frustrating as all get out).
