The Final Cockdown: #12 Brison Williams

Grant Halverson

Brison Williams will do his best to fill the role of D.J. Swearinger, who was responsible for making sure the defense was both lined up and turnt up.

Brison Williams
True Junior Free Safety
5'11", 218 lbs.
Warner Robins, GA

Recruitment:
3 stars, #77 cornerback in the 2010 class
Other offers: None. Brison spent a year at Fork Union Military Academy after signing an NLI with the Gamecocks in 2010. He enrolled out South Carolina in January of 2011.

College Career:
Williams was a fall camp breakout sensation in 2011 before fracturing his arm, an injury that held him out of the first four games of his freshman year and caused him to play the remaining 9 games with an awesome-looking-but-probably-detrimental-to-dexterity club hand.

In 2012, Williams got off to a rough start when he badly misplayed a ball thrown by Vanderbilt's Jordan Rodgers, allowing Jordan Matthews to turn a 15-yard pass into a 78-yard touchdown but rebounded to have a solid sophomore campaign that included a critical interception in the fourth quarter of the Clemson game to turn over a Tiger drive that had crossed over into Carolina territory.

2012 Stats:
48 tackles, 1 sack, 1.5 TFL, 1 FF, 1 FR, 2 INTs, 4 PBUs

2013 Outlook:
There is no question that, with multi-year starters D.J. Swearinger and DeVonte Holloman moving on to the NFL, Brison Williams will be expected to take on a bigger leadership role in 2103. Williams occupied the boundary safety position during his first two years with the Gamecocks but moved over to free safety at the beginning of fall camp to ensure an experience player replaces Swearinger, who was responsible for making sure that everyone in the defense was properly aligned.

Trivia:
Brison Williams sounds like Willams-Brice backwards but with "son" on the end of it so hey I guess that's neat or something.

Possible Todd Ellis play-by-play call:
"Boyd out of the gun, takes the snap, fires across the middle to Watkins - BUT IT'S PICKED OFF! Brison Williams has it, and he's across midfield and down inside the 30, and no one is going to catch him, folks. Tajh Boyd drove his Chevy to the levee but the levee was BRISON. And I'll tell you what, Tommy, Dabo Swinney is down on the sidelines with the good ol' boys drinking whiskey and rye singing this is the day that we lost FIVE in a row."
