Gamecock Soccer Update: Epicly Awesome Miracles

This is an update on both the men's and the women's soccer teams. I'm sorry I haven't been around this weekend, I intended to write a FanPost after each men's game, but I never got around to it (and that's why I would be a terrible writer, despite really wanting to be one here at GABA).

Men's Soccer

South Carolina used late game heroics to make a miracle run in the C-USA tournament. They faced #25 Kentucky in the first round, and trailed early when a Gamecock defender fouled Ryan Creel in the box, giving the Cats a PK. Kristopher Tollefsen scored when Marco Velez guessed left. A minute later, the Gamecock's gifted freshman Mikkel Knudsen had an incredible shot saved. 6 minutes into the second half saw senior midfielder Mahamoudou Kaba level the game at 1 goal apiece. Kaba had scored his 4th goal of the season. With time winding down, I got ready for overtime and went to refill my soda. When I came back, the Gamecocks soccer team was celebrating an incredible game-winning shot from Koty Millard. Kaba was the one who really won the game. Kaba found Millard, who sneaked it passed Wildcat GK Callum Irving.

The Gamecocks then proceeded to play #21 UAB. UAB may suck at football and basketball, but they have a very solid soccer team. But the Blazers had a major brain fart as the Gamecocks continued their magical season. Velez had four saves in the first half, including a penalty shot, en route to his fourth shutout of the season. Mikkel Knudsen flicked home a sexy game-winning shot.

On Sunday afternoon, the Gamecocks ran out of magic. Sidney Rivera and Geoffrey Hill scored goals in the 19th and 75th minutes, respectively. Marco Velez once again had four saves in the first half, but his heroics weren't enough to keep the game level. Jeffrey Torda scored a goal late in the second half, and Mikkel Knudsen narrowly missed what could have been an epicly (for you grammar nerds out there, that is a word, used to describe Gamecock soccer games) awesome game-winning shot. Four Gamecocks made the All-Tournament Team: Mikkel Knudsen, Mahamoudou Kaba, Marco Velez, and Braeden Toyer.

Women's Soccer

The women's team faced off against everybody's least favorite team in any sport, the Clemson Tigers. This was the second time the two teams faced each other, with Clemson prevailing in the regular season match up. The stakes were a whole lot higher last Friday, with the teams battling to advance in the NCAA Tournament. A defensive struggle gave way to a penalty shootout after 110 minutes of expert defense by both squads. The Gamecocks best chance to score came in the 6th minute when Raina Johnson had her shot saved. Sabrina D'Angelo, the Gamecocks goalkeeper played some epicly (once again, this is a word, used for Gamecock soccer only) awesome soccer, recording her 29th career shutout. Mollie Patton had 31 shutouts in her Gamecock career, so D'Angelo needs a few more scoreless matches to make Gamecock history. South Carolina scored on all four of their PKs (the 5th wasn't necessary), to advance. The Gamecocks will face off against Seattle this Friday.
