SB Nation 2014 NFL Playoff Coverage

Raise your hand if you had money on Akeem Auguste being the first member of the 2012 South Carolina football team to win a Super Bowl ring. Yeah, I didn't think so. Of course, the big caveat here is that Auguste is on the Seahawks' practice squad and, therefore, won't actually be playing in Super Bowl XLVIII. But I mean, come on. They're still going to give him a ring if Seattle wins, right?

Former Gamecock wide receiver Sidney Rice is also an inactive member of Seattle's roster as he recovers from a torn ACL that he suffered last October. It's a shame, too, because if Rice had been healthy, it would have been the first time in recent memory that a player who was a bona fide star at South Carolina would have had a chance to make a high-profile impact in the Super Bowl.

There is one South Carolina alumnus who is expected to participate. Guard/center Lemuel Jeanpierre played in all 16 regular season games for Seattle and started in three of them. You may remember Jeanpierre (2005-2009) as one of those stray sneaky-good offensive lineman that South Carolina had throughout the mid-2000s who has gone on to have a long career in the NFL.

Separate of any rooting interests that might be tied to our loyalties to former Gamecocks, this Super Bowl seems like it's going to be a fun one, even for people like me who aren't nearly as into the pro game as they're into college football. After all, there's a possibility that this thing ends with Richard Sherman telling Erin Andrews that John Fox needs to stop trying to come at him with a mediocre quarterback like Peyton Manning.
