National Signing Day 2014: Kevin Crosby signs with South Carolina

The long-time Gamecock commit makes his pledge official.

Kevin "KC" Crosby of Bamberg (S.C.) Bamberg-Erhhardt has been committed to South Carolina since June of 2013. Today, after over eight months of unwavering, Crosby made his pledge to the Gamecocks official when he signed his National Letter of Intent. The 6'0, 236-pound tight end picked the Gamecocks last year over upwards of 40 other division one offers. Since that time, Crosby has played in the Under Armour All-American game and has positioned himself as one of the most versatile prospects in South Carolina's 2014 class.

Crosby will start his South Carolina career as an H-back, which is often viewed as a combination between a tight-end, receiver, and fullback. Crosby has the tools to line up in the slot, serve in a blocking role, or be the motion man in any given offensive play. Though he is only listed at 6'0, he has long arms which give him the ability to catch the ball as if he was 2 or 3 inches taller. He has also shown he has reliable hands and though undersized, has excellent flexibility and athleticism. The South Carolina native tallied 43 catches for over 570 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior at Bamberg Ehrhardt High School.

Even though the Gamecocks coaching staff has told Crosby he will start out on offense, some believe he is better suited to play linebacker at the next level. During his prep career, Crosby played on both sides of the ball, but was very open during the recruiting process that his preference was to play offense.  Whether or not Crosby switches to defense during his time in Columbia will remain to be seen. That move will largely depend upon his ability to grasp the offense in combination with the depth in front of him. Currently, South Carolina still has senior tight end Rory Anderson and junior Jerrell Adams on the roster. Drew Owens and Kelvin Rainey also have game experience at the tight end position.

Given South Carolina's depth at tight end, the most likely scenario is that Crosby will redshirt in 2014. But his versatility could give him an edge that other prospects coming in at deep positions might lack.
