So proud of how the Gamecocks finished the season. We won 4 of our last 5 games (not including the Tennessee loss), including a home game against our rival Kentucky, our first win at the Hump (against Mississippi St.) in 5 years, a total wipeout of the Auburn Tigers (a team that swept us in the season), and a tight win against a much better Arkansas Razorback team. Our only loss in the last 5 is to the #1 team in college basketball.
The SEC is growing stronger in basketball. Hopefully we can keep up the pace, but in order to do so, we're going to need to be able to compete in the paint. Why did we lose to Tennessee? Because our big men could not keep up with Jarnell Stokes and Jerome Maymon. Their defensive pressure was to much for our young players, but next season, they will be older, more experienced. They will have watched all the game videos, they will have learned from their mistakes, they'll get stronger, and Duane Notice and Sindarius Thornwell have a lot to prove next season. Our big dudes (Laimonas Chatkevicius, Mindaugas Kacinas, Demetrius Henry, and Michael Carrera) need to get stronger, faster, and even though Carrera and Henry are somewhat undersized, if they play with passion, energy, and determination, they have a TON of potential.
Even though he brought seven freshmen in this year, Frank has already pulled in three new recruits: Shamiek Sheppard, Marcus Stroman, and Temarcus Blanton. I'll talk about them in a later FanPost.
How do ya'll feel about the way our Gamecocks finished the season? And how do ya'll think we will improve in the 2014-2015 season?
