Columbia City Council Makes Initial Approval of Minor League Stadium Contract

+

The State's Clif LeBlanc reports that Columbia's City Council has tentatively approved a plan to build a publicly funded minor league stadium. The plan was narrowly approved 4-3 against vocal opposition from a council minority as well as many in the public at large. The State reports on the details of the plan, but in short, Columbia would cover roughly 75% of the costs with public funds, while additional funds would come from regional investors. Public funds would come from a tax on restaurant and bar patrons. What do you think of the plan? On the one hand, I'm naturally skeptical of a plan whose defense is "If these deals didn’t make sense, why is everyone else doing it?" On the other hand, while the Gamecocks provide the city of Columbia with quality baseball, college ball ends in June and higher-level minor league ball with a spiffy new stadium does provide a nice summer entertainment option.
