The South Carolina Gamecocks are set to compete in the 2014 Charleston Classic in Charleston, South Carolina from November 20th to November 23rd. It is an 8 team bracket, but two of the eight teams are yet to be announced. The six teams that have already been announced are the Miami Hurricanes, Penn State Nittany Lions, USC Trojans, Akron Zips, and the Cornell Big Red.
South Carolina's latest preseason tournament appearance, the 2013 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, was a success. The Gamecocks finished 3rd, including a stunning upset of then-undefeated Saint Mary's, a tough loss to a top 30 Boise State team, and an incredible second half comeback against the Akron Zips.
If we are matched up against Akron in the first round, they'll be hungry for revenge after we defeated them twice in the same week last season (by a combined score of 147-101). A matchup with this team should result in a 1st round victory. Of course, upsets can happen.
Penn State and Cornell are two teams that should be easy to beat, Cornell more so than Penn State. Cornell finished last year with TWO wins (against lowly Oberlin College and a 3 point victory over Dartmouth). Cornell should be a breeze, but a matchup with Penn State will reveal whether we can beat an offensive team (they average 75 points per game).
USC and Miami both belong to power conferences (PAC-12 and ACC, respectively), but finished in the lower tier of their respective conferences. A matchup with either of those teams would prove to be challenging.
Also, the Gamecocks will be playing in Charleston, South Carolina, less than a two hour drive from Columbia. Go COCKS!
