2014 NCAA Baseball Regionals: Maryland comes back to beat Old Dominion 4-3

Old Dominion looked to be in control for most of the game, but Maryland came back to win in the 9th on a walk-off HBP

The end of this game got crazy, but the first and second innings were pretty quiet for both Maryland and Old Dominion. The Monarchs scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning. A one out triple put a Monarch in scoring position, and a single got him home. Both teams were quiet again until the top of the fifth, when the Monarchs once again got a run across the plate. They stranded two more runners to keep a 2-0 lead in the middle of the fifth.

Maryland had a good scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth. The Terps got two on with one out, and after a fly out the second HBP of the inning loaded the bases with two outs and chased the Old Dominion starter. But the Terps just couldn't push a run across.  Old Dominion made them pay for it by extending the lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly.

The Terrapins finally ended the shutout in the bottom of the eight. Three straight singles loaded the bases with no outs. After a pitching change Maryland hit into a double play, but did score a run. A strikeout ended the inning with no further damage and preserved Old Dominion's 3-1 lead.

With Old Dominion up 3-1 going to the bottom of the ninth, things didn't look great for the Terps. But things got crazy pretty fast. Maryland put runners on the corners with one out off of a double and an error. An RBI single cut the lead to 3-2. Then a walk loaded the bases. Old Dominion hit the next Terp batter to plate the tying run. It seemed inevitable that that the Terps would manage to score, but Old Dominion didn't even make them work for it. The Monarch pitcher hit the next batter too, giving Maryland a very weird walk-off win.

Maryland will play the winner of tonight's game between the Gamecocks and the Camels at 7 p.m. tomorrow and Old Dominion will face the loser in a 1 p.m. elimination game.
