Misguided fan or traitor?

I was out with a fellow USC Alum at a bar in Asheville, NC. My friend and die-hard Gamecock supporter (or so I thought) encountered a nice couple from Michigan. One person in this so-called nice couple from Michigan was a Univ. of Mich. fan and a discussion about the merits of their team began. After awhile my friend began to sing the Michigan fight song. (Some context: my friend's sister went to the Univ. of Michigan, so while he pulls for the Gamecocks he doesn't hate Michigan either. Fair enough, I think.)

After my mention of last year's Outback Bowl, the person in the so-called nice couple from Michigan said that we alumni and supporters of South Carolina were "A bunch of hillbillies." ...I was appalled! We are not from Clemson! I told my friend - the one who graduated the same year as I from our beloved USC - what this person from Michigan had said and he began to sing the Michigan fight song AGAIN!!?!!

My question is, what am I supposed to do? It never occurred to me that my friend - someone who I once thought bled garnet and black like me - could possibly be a traitor. What is the appropriate way to handle this? I'm stunned.
