Half Cocked, Episode 7: Just Looking at That Guy in a Uniform is Pure Sex

The boys of Half Cocked have still not heard back from the compliance department, Lorenzo Ward gets promoted to defensive coordinator, Stephon Gilmore and Devin Taylor get their NFL evaluations back, Darrin Horn has not been fired yet, the Capital One Bowl gets previewed, and the 2012 football schedule is a bloodbath. This week's drinking game? Finish off a half-empty bottle of New Year's Eve Andre every time I say "it will be interesting to see what happens."

SB Nation Blogpoll Ballot: Week Thirteen

Here's my final ballot, same as the draft. SEC Power Poll ballot remains the same, too.

SB Nation Blogpoll Draft Ballot: Week Thirteen

Here's my draft ballot. Let me know what you think.

1. LSU Tigers
2. Oklahoma St. Cowboys
3. Virginia Tech Hokies
4. Houston Cougars
5. Alabama Crimson Tide

You all know my thoughts on rematches; as said before, I do believe that 'Bama is likely the second best team, but I'd prefer to see any of these other teams get a shot instead of them. OSU or VT could help themselves by dominating this weekend, although truth be told, 'Bama is probably already in. (Yes, the BCS is so screwed up that 'Bama has a better shot right now than LSU.) I should note that VT is playing well right now; I think voters should give them some credit for improving over the course of the season, particularly if they throttle Clemson this weekend.

6. Southern Cal Trojans
7. Oregon Ducks
8. Stanford Cardinal
9. Arkansas Razorbacks
10. South Carolina Gamecocks

I'm not in favor of giving a Pac-10 team a shot at the title. I think these are all good teams, but they've beaten each other, and Oregon already got its shot at LSU. I do think SoCal is probably the best at this point, though, and might even be a team that could give LSU a run for its money if it wasn't on probation. I can't see putting Arkansas above the Pac-10 group, given that Oregon at least gave LSU something of a game. Lastly, I may be a homer for it, but I think USC has done more than either Boise, Oklahoma, or the two-loss B10 teams. Ergo, top-10 ranking. Hope we get a chance to get that high for real before the season ends.

11. Boise St. Broncos
12. Georgia Bulldogs
13. Michigan St. Spartans
14. Oklahoma Sooners
15. Wisconsin Badgers

And here are Boise and some other two-loss teams. You can take your pick from the two-loss group.

16. Kansas St. Wildcats
17. Michigan Wolverines
18. Baylor Bears
19. TCU Horned Frogs
20. Nebraska Cornhuskers

More two-loss teams and a couple of three-loss teams. I like Baylor the most out of the three-loss teams, due to their set of quality wins. Can't believe Michigan is getting so much love for a BCS bid. Well, I can believe it, but I think it's BS.

21. West Virginia Mountaineers
22. Penn St. Nittany Lions
23. Clemson Tigers
24. Florida St. Seminoles
25. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Take your pick from this group of either inconsistent or mediocre teams. Trust me, I didn't want to include Clemson, but the options below them (Southern Miss.?) just weren't very appealing.

SB Nation Blogpoll Ballot: Week Twelve

Only change is that I swapped Houston and Oklahoma St. Yes, Oklahoma St. is the team I want to see in the BCS Title Game, if it beats Oklahoma. If OSU loses, yeah, I'll probably go with Houston. Yes, I get that Ok. St. lost to Iowa St., while Alabama lost to LSU. I get that Alabama has the better resume. I simply think that teams should have to beat teams from other conferences in order to win the national title. The bowls are premised on this idea. I'm probably wrong about this, but I'm sticking to it for now.

My SEC Power Poll ballot stays the same from yesterday.

Why I'm Against an LSU-Alabama Rematch in the BCS Title Game

After a chaotic weekend in which many of the contenders from other conferences were upset, it's beginning to appear very likely that the BCS Title Game will feature a rematch between LSU and Alabama. (Arkansas may have something to say about that this weekend, though.) I'm against this under any circumstances, and not just because of some vague notion that "Alabama got its chance." I have two reasons: the regular season is a playoff under the current system, and you can't get a good sense of who is the best team in the nation without matching up teams from two conferences.

The first point is fairly self-explanatory. As I understand it, under the current BCS system, the regular season serves as a playoff. That means that Alabama was eliminated from contention when it lost to LSU. Another team needs to get a shot. If a playoff is instituted that includes berths for non-conference champions (and I would probably be against that, too), it would make sense for there to be rematches. However, that would be a different system than the one we have now, so it's irrelevant to the situation at hand.

More importantly, I think it's shortsighted to say that Alabama and LSU are clearly the best teams in the nation before they've been matched up against teams from other conferences. LSU, of course, has an impressive win over Oregon, but that was a long time ago it's only one game. Otherwise, all we know about these teams is based on the what they've done in the SEC against common opponents. We just don't know how they would match up against teh best of other conferences. Obviously, based on recent post-season results, there is abundant reason to believe that the best teams in the SEC are among the best in the nation. However, you just never know until you match the conference champions against each other in the post-season. In 2006, a lot of people thought that Michigan and Ohio State were the best two teams in the country and favored a rematch between the Buckeyes and Wolverines for that reason. However, better minds prevailed, and in the bowls we learned that not only were the Buckeyes not the best team in the nation, but that both teams were overrated and had built their reputations by feasting on subpar Big 10 competition. While I don't think the SEC is as weak as the Big 10, I do think it is necessary to give other conferences a shot in order to make sure each year. The BCS Title Game shouldn't feature rematches between conference foes in order to effectively weed out any bias that uncomparable competition has worked into the voting.

All of this being the case, I hope that voters influence the system by heavily voting against a rematch.

Gameday Depot / Garnet and Black Attack Week Twelve Pick 'Em Results

Gameday Depot
FTC disclosure: This contest is sponsored by Gameday Depot and SB Nation.

Due to either extreme brilliance or sheer luck, Cocky, Esq. arises above the chaos to win this week's Garnet and Black Attack Pick 'Em. However, because he's won in recent weeks, the award goes to rondo(jesus). rondo, be on the lookout for a confirmation email.

I actually tied for first with Cocky, Esq. That tells you how strange this week was. I typically make wacky picks and don't alter the confidence scores because I don't really care whether I win or not. (I'm not eligible for the prize because I'm the blog's manager.) This "strategy" served me well this week.

Remember, you can avoid the crowds this Black Friday and get either (1) officially licensed South Carolina Gamecocks hoodies, jackets, t-shirts and more at the Garnet and Black Attack licensed store, or (2) your very own custom tees at the Garnet and Black Attack custom store.

Remember that there is still a $50 gift certificate up for grabs to whoever finishes first for the entire season, so keep playing. Cocky, Esq is in the lead for the time being, with ssadler not far behind. Should be an interesting finish.

SB Nation Blogpoll Draft Ballot: Week Eleven

Let me know your thoughts.

1. LSU  Tigers
2. Houston Cougars
3. Oklahoma St. Cowboys
4. Stanford Cardinal
5. Alabama Crimson Tide

Before you say I'm crazy, let me say that I am against a rematch under any circumstances. Under the current system, I believe that the title game should feature an opportunity for teams from two different conferences to showcase their best teams. I think voters should vote against a rematch for this reason. OK--now you  can say I'm crazy. But my opinion probably won't change. I may write a longer post about this later on.

6. Arkansas Razorbacks
7. Boise St. Broncos
8. Virginia Tech Hokies
9. Southern Cal Trojans
10. Oregon Ducks

Arkansas is probably better than six, but, again, I'm voting against a rematch or a matchup between conference foes in the BCS Game. I'll reconsider them after they play LSU. Boise--well, they sure must be shooting themselves for losing to TCU, because they might have gotten a title shot otherwise. VA Tech has actually played well lately, and I have a feeling they may win the rematch with Clemson. So. Cal--well, they're good, but I still detest Lane Kiffin. Couldn't believe him taking jabs at the NCAA in his post-game interview for punishing his corrupt program. Oregon--still inconsistent, still can't play defense. Exciting team, though.

11. South Carolina Gamecocks
12. Michigan St. Spartans
13. Oklahoma Sooners
14. Georgia Bulldogs
15. Wisconsin Badgers

Here are some more two-loss teams. Any of these teams could move into the top 10 to finish the season if they end well.

16. Kansas St. Wildcats
17. Michigan Wolverines
18. Penn St. Nittany Lions
19. Clemson Tigers
20. TCU Horned Frogs

More two-loss teams here, but these are of the slightly less appealing sort than 11-15. These teams each have blemishes that makes them seem a little less impressive than the teams above them.

21. Baylor Bears
22. Nebraska Cornhuskers
23. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
24. Virginia Cavaliers
25. Georgia Tech Yellowjackets

Not a whole lot to say about this group, other than the finish to Baylor-Oklahoma was probably the best I've seen this season. Simply breathtaking. That said, most of these teams are either wildly inconsistent or only a bit better than average.
