SEC Hoops Power Poll Ballot: 1/29-2/4

72608_kentucky_s_carolina_basketball

I won't submit my ballot until later tonight, so you have the afternoon to convince me of any mistakes I might have made.

1. Kentucky Wildcats

The best team in the nation right now--this could be the year for Calipari.

2. Florida Gators

Not playing at Kentucky's level, but a very good team that seems to have found its rhythm as of late. The clear number two right now.

3. Mississippi St. Bulldogs

Good team, but didn't really put up a fight against the Gators. Very close win over Auburn suggests they're vulnerable to average teams. Defense just isn't good enough.

4. Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt looks to be a solid tournament team, but 'Dores fans have to be disappointed that they're clearly not the title contender they looked to be preseason. The rebounding numbers are not good for a team with talented big men.

5. Arkansas Razorbacks

The win over Vanderbilt had me thinking that Arkansas might break into the top four, but they followed it up with a bad loss to LSU.

6. Alabama Crimson Tide

Bounced back a little bit after the loss to South Carolina. Gritty double-OT win over Ole Miss.

7. Mississippi Rebels

This team has really impressed me with how it's bounced back from its mid-season slump. It now looks like a solid NIT team, at the very least. It's beating the teams it should and is competitive in the big games, sometimes pulling upsets.

8. Tennessee Volunteers

Outside of the UConn game, this team has the look of one that whips bad teams but can't beat the good ones. Talented enough to make it, but probably will miss the NIT due to ugly early-season OOC losses.

9. LSU Tigers

Nice win over Arkansas to bounce out of the mid-season doldrums.

10. Auburn Tigers

Another team that's really impressing me, Auburn looked like the conference's worst team at one point, but they've managed to string together a decent season; they're winning a game here and there and aren't caving against good teams.

11. Georgia Bulldogs

Really falling apart at the seams after what seemed to be a promising win over Tennessee a few weeks ago. Will be interesting to see if they're better than South Carolina when the two play.

12. South Carolina Gamecocks

Interesting to see if they can bounce back on the road to improvement after being utterly curb stomped by Kentucky.

SEC Hoops Power Poll Results: 1/22-1/28

My vote stays the same from yesterday. Here are this week's results:

1. Kentucky Wildcats 84
2. Florida Gators 75
3. Vanderbilt Commodores 69
4. Mississippi St. Bulldogs 66
5. Alabama Crimson Tide 52
6. Arkansas Razorbacks 47
7. Mississippi Rebels 42
8. Tennessee Volunteers 36
9. LSU Tigers 30
10. Auburn Tigers 20
11. Georgia Bulldogs 14
12. South Carolina Gamecocks 11

Surprises? South Carolina wasn't a unanimous number 12, and there seems to be a lot of pity around for Alabama, who doesn't drop despite poor play as of late.

See what the voters said after the jump.

SEC Power Poll Draft Ballot: 1/22-1/28

Let me know if you have any qualms with these picks.

1. Kentucky Wildcats

I'll just assume no one disagrees with this one.

2. Florida Gators

After further proving they can win on the road against Ole Miss and taking out former-number-two Mississippi St., the Gators must move up. Their trip to Rupp looms next week.

3. Mississippi St. Bulldogs

The Bulldogs blew a chance for a nice win with a lackluster performance in Gainesville. Solid team, but clearly not elite.

4. Vanderbilt Commodores

I thought about putting them at three, but they lost to MSU head-to-head at home a couple of weeks ago, and their wins are unimpressive. We'll talk if they beat Florida or Kentucky.

5. Mississippi Rebels

This is where it gets hard. I've had Alabama at this spot most of the year, but the Tide lost to South Carolina, which is very bad. I'll put the Rebels here for now; Andy Kennedy's squad keeps chugging along, despite intermittent setbacks.

6. Alabama Crimson Tide

Bounced out of their losing streak with a win over Arkansas, but man, that loss to South Carolina may hurt come Selection Sunday.

7. Arkansas Razorbacks

Could really use a win over Vanderbilt tomorrow night if it wants to bolster its tournament profile.

8. Tennessee Volunteers

Yes, they play pretty good basketball sometimes, but they also seem to disappear at others. Loss to Vandy was very ugly.

9. LSU Tigers

Have seemingly lost their mojo after a nice mid-season stretch.

10. Auburn Tigers

Not a good team, certainly, but Tony Barbee's Tigers have managed to string a somewhat decent season together, considering the circumstances.

11. Georgia Bulldogs

Recent win over Tennessee was nice, but otherwise, the Bulldogs are winless in the SEC.

12. South Carolina Gamecocks

Well, at least they're no longer winless in the SEC. At least there's that.

SEC Hoops Power Poll Draft Ballot: 1/15-1/21

Any disagreements, let me know. I'll be back later tonight with an assessment of the Sands hire.

1. Kentucky Wildcats

I'm assuming no one will contest this selection.

2. Mississippi St. Bulldogs

Nabbed a nice home win over Alabama over the weekend. Not clear yet whether this team is good enough for a deep March run, but that's true of everyone except for the 'Cats.

3. Florida Gators

The win over South Carolina shouldn't impress anyone too much, but it does somewhat dispel the notion that the Gators can't win on the road, particularly considering how well they shot the ball. Granted, attendance figures in Columbia don't exactly suggest a brutal road atmosphere, so perhaps we shouldn't make too much of it, after all, but it's also worth taking into consideration how talented this team is, and how high it's ceiling is.

4. Vanderbilt Commodores

Vandy remains undefeated in the SEC, but it's played a really weak schedule. A road trip at Alabama will tell us whether the 'Dores deserve to move up the poll.

5. Alabama Crimson Tide

The Tide failed to nab a road win at MSU that would have helped them move up the poll.

6. Tennessee Volunteers

No, they don't have a very good record, and yes, they do have two conference losses. However, this team has played a brutal, brutal schedule, and it's managed to avoid getting destroyed in the process. Those close losses to Kentucky, et al., will turn into wins when the Vols begin playing the lower-tier teams.

7. LSU Tigers

I'm having trouble deciding between Arkansas and LSU here. Ark. did beat LSU, but it lacks as many quality wins, and it also lost to Ole Miss this week, so I'm going with LSU and will assume the Tigers will avenge their loss when the Hogs come to Baton Rouge.

8. Arkansas Razorbacks

See above.

9. Georgia Bulldogs

Now we get to the teams that are really struggling. Georgia has been more competitive in its many losses than some of the teams below, so I'm going to give them the nod for the ninth spot.

10. South Carolina Gamecocks

The Gamecocks have been something of a victim of a tough beginning to the conference slate, but their inability to take either Florida or Vanderbilt to the wire at home suggests that this team won't be winning many games against decent competition this year.

11. Ole Miss Rebels

Lost to Auburn in overtime at Auburn, but should beat them when they come to Oxford. Win over Arkansas showed a little fire. Still, a very bad team right now.

12. Auburn Tigers

Hard to imagine these guys winning many games this year. Barbee has a huge job ahead of him.
