'Cock on the Ground: Photos from the Gamecocks' Upset of Alabama
Friends, today was a great day to be a Gamecock. I was lucky enough to be present in Columbia as our beloved South Carolina Gamecocks took down the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. Below you will find some of the sights I experienced throughout the day. Unfortunately, I was unable to load the videos I took as the clock wound down. I'll try again to get them up later in the week. Go 'Cocks!
Scoreboard!
More pictures after the jump.
I love this sign.
I think Erin Andrews is in there somewhere.
I'm Ron Burgandy?
Straight and to the point.
The flip side of the above sign. Word.
One of my favorites.
Copyright that, why don't you.
"Trent Richardson uses Shake Weights."
True.
Not trying to get political, folks. But funny is funny.
The student section started the chant "You, Can't, Stop, Us. Clap, Clap. Clap, Clap, Clap." referring to rushing the field. To which Columbia city PD replied "Yes, we can." They tased the first guy over the fence. That's all it took.
State Trooper reinforcements. They were serious.

I wish I had video to post.
The stadium was absolutely deafening. It wasn’t until I got home that I noticed just how loud it actually was. In the realtive silence of my home I noticed for the first time that my ears were still ringing.

Awesome. Great pics.
After one of the major tv timeouts in the first half, Verne Lundquist said “well, when we left you they were cheering, and now that we’re back they’re still cheering” …. even he seemed highly impressed; the atmosphere seemed out of this world on the tube.
Hope it was the loudest “GAME … COCKS … GAME … COCKS” in memory … also hope a ton of undecided recruits were in the stands ….

There were many major recruits in attendance.
And we got a commitment from 4-star RB Shon Carson, who also plays baseball.
This game will pay major dividends in recruiting.

Carson sounds like an interesting player from his scout.com profile.
Nice speed and power in a short package.

Kornblut's site says
Jadaveon Clowney (DL), Brandon Shell (OL) and Shamir Jeffrey (OB) were all at the game, along with Damiere Byrd (WR) of New Jersey.
Needless to say, having recruits of this quality see us beat Bama … knowing the coaches can ‘do’ it …. is a huge.
Not to mention getting to hear Sandstorm.
Go Cocks!

There were others there, as well...
Phillip Dukes is another big name who I believe was there, and he has apparently come out and named us his leader.
If we can land all the players you just mentioned, this class will be every bit as good as the one with Jeffery, Holloman, etc.

Is the SEC limit 25 or 28?
We’re getting close. We’re at 20 right. Do players that committed in other years but didn’t qualify still count toward the 2011 total (like Quarles)?

I think 28
per rule change in 2009. I didn’t see that it’s been moved up or down. I’m not sure how many of our current commitments have qualified or agreed to “gray shirt” or whatever ….
by tryptic67 on Oct 10, 2025 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions
If I understand the rules correctly...
We can take 32. The limit is 28, but the guys that committed from prior years (Quarles, etc.) go towards the prior year.

I may be getting it slightly wrong.
I’m not an expert on the ins and outs of recruiting. But that’s how I understand the rules. I heard someone on the radio talking one time about it, and they said we could take 32, so that much I think we know.

does this mean ...
there are upperclassmen/scholarship holders who might lose their scholly? i’ve never understood how that works … how much “room” do we have for next year, or is this the way of the world … sign the max, and wait for attrition to work its magic?
by tryptic67 on Oct 10, 2025 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm not exactly sure.
But I do think teams tend to oversign a bit under the assumption that a few guys won’t work out. You always have some non-qualifiers, guys that transfer, etc.

BTW...
If the news about Dukes being close to committing to us is true, it would be a huge coup for us. Dukes has been considered a strong Clemson lean for some time now, but with the Tigers struggling the way they are and our program looking poised to challenge for an SEC title, Dukes has reconsidered. It’s getting guys like him to choose Carolina instead of Clemson (as well as getting guys like A.J. Green and Carlos Dunlap to stay home) that will take us over the top. So keep rooting for the Tigers implosion that is currently underway.

Clemson plays the Terps
at home next Saturday, at noon, where they will retire CJ’s # 28 at halftime (I assume CJ will travel down for the ceremony - the Bills host the Lions that Sunday) …
look for Dabo aka “Goat Boy” (as fomer Clemson, current Illini DC Vic Koenning used to call him) to squeak by Maryland and declare that the “turn around” is underway … just like last year! Gene Sapakoff of the Post & Courier will declare it just as big (if not bigger) than the Cocks beating the Tide …. implosion over … !
by tryptic67 on Oct 10, 2025 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Heh. I sure hope so...
Because I’d like to see Dabo do just enough to keep the natives relatively happy (not that I think they’d fire him for a losing season, but you know). I may be wrong, but I’m beginning to think that Dabo is not the answer for that program. His coaching decisions this season have been questionable, to say the least. He does seem to be a good recruiter, but if our program takes off, I think we can outrecruit him any day of the week. If you’re a young man from SC, why would you choose to play for Clemson when you could play for USC and compete for championships in the premier conference?

while my wife made me do the dishes ...
I was thinking what I would do if i was a young Top D 1 …err FBS … prospect … … :~)
Clemson has some positives, but its been stuck in the middle of the ACC pack for as long (if not longer) than most 18 y.o. recruits have been paying attention to major college football … and for at least the last 5-6 years, the primacy of the SEC has been drummed into almost all the boys in the region …
Dabo is a rah-rah guy and a heckuva recruiter - maybe pound for pound the best “recruiter” in the Carolinas and Georgia, but Spurrier is on a different level … the Ole Ball Coach is a Coach not a recruiter … there’s a difference that seems to be making a difference so far.
You’re right, long term Terry Don has got to eventually dump Dabo, who basically has the team exactly where Tommy Bowden left it …. I’ve said previously one of my biggest fears is Dabo recrutiing for Derek Dooley up in Knoxville … but I think he’s got at least this season and 2011 before we’ll see a new coach in Pickens County.
by tryptic67 on Oct 10, 2025 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions
I think you're exactly right.
I’m sure that opposing coaches often like to try to dissuade recruits from coming here because of our “history.” However, recruits don’t remember when we stunk up the ACC and independent ranks. They were just out of diapers during 1-21, when we were SEC bottom feeders on the level of a Vandy. What they can probably remember better is when we started being competitive under Holtz. What I’m sure they can remember is us hiring the Ball Coach and him asking “Why not us?” in regards to our chances to win a title in the SEC, which, as you say, has become widely known as the premier conference in college football. They remember us finally beating UT and UF. They remember Stephon and Devonte talking about a “New Carolina.” They see guys like Marcus and Alshon with their faces plastered on ESPN.com and becoming household names. And they can see that the OBC may be about to make good on all his promises. That’s what these young men know, and frankly you have to think that it’s a rosier picture than what they see at Clemson. Come on down, boys. Be a part of history.

I hadn't followed him as closely ...
as the Rock Hill boys, Brandon and Shamir … but he looks strong!!! This might be very, very fortuitous … good DL are hard-as-heck to recruit in depth, and i thougt we were only really working on a JUCO DL (Maurice Couch) from Cloud City JC in Kan., who apparently prefers Southern Cal and KU over the Cocks. Gotta put our trust in the coaches, but all things being equal I like having them as freshmen with 4 years of eligibility, rather than JUCOs with 2 to play 2
(Ive always thought this was unfair to JUCOs, who probably should have 3 to play 3)

Almost every cop I've ever seen is more evil than the person they're often arresting.
They treat people like animals, regardless of what their crime is. Tasers can kill people, and they use them like pepper spray. It’s absurd, they know it, and don’t care. A cop shouldn’t even pull a taser unless someone has a knife and the cop doesn’t think he can over power the person safely.
stuff 'bout stuff.

There has never been an actual documented case where a taser has been the only reason a person died. Tasers only have ampage of .0026 which will not kill you. The instances that people have been kiled after being tased involve other substances like drugs or alcohol, or prior medical conditions. The taser is actually the best alternative , once its over, its over. I’ve actually rode the lightning and know how it feels, I don’t use mine unless I have to. I don’t think its fair to group all cops as evil. Cops are people to but, they get to deal with the scum of the earth all day every day. They go out every day to protect others not knowing whether or not they will come home. Whether or not they will ever see their families again. They don’t do it for the money because most of us have to work multiple jobs. Even if you disagree with their actions, they should still be appreciated. It would help if you viewed it from both perspectives instead of just that of an upset fan. By state and federal law, police officer are allowed to be plus 1 on the use of force spectrum, which means if there is a fist or unarmed resistance a taser, asp, or pepper spray can be used. In situations involving a weapon, deadly force is warranted. The students and fans knew the rules before the victory, when the chose to violate the law they took their fate in their own hands. There are 100 cops and a crowd of 80,000 plus. When someone is resisting arrest, which includes running away, the officer needs to get them in custody and get them out of there. They don’t have the time or man power to mess around.

Tasing and pepper spray over college kids trying to celebrate a program changing win
That is absolutely indefensible. I normally come down on the side of law and order, but whoever tased the kid needs to be suspended. If that had not stopped the crowd, pulling out tasers could have led to a VERY ugly scene that led to injured students and officers.
I hope the university does something about this abuse of power.

The real culprit here...
is the SEC. The “no rushing the field” policy is ridiculous. If everyone knew that they could get onto the field in a timely manner, there wouldn’t be any of this nonsense, and it wouldn’t be dangerous.

And, I should add,
the policy probably won’t be changed until some college kid dies from being tased for trying to hop a fence.

You may also be interested in my post above It provides a little insight on the taser. I do agree that no being able to rush the field is ridiculous but, look at how many people are trampled to death at Wal-mart during the day after thanksgiving sales. People don’t care about each other anymore, and with a crowd of 80,000 rushing the field injury is almost guranteed. Although I don’t like it, I understand why they do it.

I agree completely
I also am a little upset with Eric Hyman. This is definitely worth paying the fine over. Bigger than the Kentucky basketball win.
