Beach bound?
Beach bound?

Good morning, Gamecock Nation. It's a slow day on the farm, but we've dug deep to scratch out what we can.

Gamecock Football

LOHD: South Carolina Assistant Coaches Targeted by Coastal Carolina. Flounder reports that both USC WR coach Steve Spurrier, Jr. and OL coach Shawn Elliot are being targeted by Coastal Carolina, and discusses the persistent rumors that Spurrier, Jr. has been offered the job already. Losing either would be tough, but Elliot's retention is hyper-critical as we continue re-building the offensive line; it would be easier to replace Spurrier, Jr, except that Steve fils has done a really great job as recruiting coordinator in relief of Shane Beamer, and it would be a shame to lose him on the heels of Jay Graham's departure.

LOHD: South Carolina Football: Corey Addison Leaving. I don't have a take on this - is it the dark underbelly of recruiting for an upwardly mobile squad, or a young man who wants more p.t.? Either way, we wish Corey well.

Bleacher Report: LOHD (i.e., the indefatigable and tireless Flounder - he's been killing it this weekend) writes: Latest Capital One Bowl News and Updates. I've never loved the slideshow format (does it drive up BR's revenues if each slide is a distinct 'hit'?) but I am a big LOHD fan, so check it out.

Ron Morris: Ellington’s best option is to play basketball. Everyone's favorite Gamecock persona non grata returns to the subject that started it all. Agree with him? Or would you rather we joined the Gamecock Central/FGF jihad against him? Personally, I think it's too early to tell which sport is the best fit for Bruce - he's shown flashes of brilliance in both; I think most fans would say football (or both) before basketball only, however. I wonder if he swings a good bat?

Phil Kornblut: Elder takes another look at Georgia . Despite the full-court press by Mark Richt and staff this weekend, it seems as if CB recruit Chaz Elder from Atlanta is still favoring USC. It's usually a positive sign when they talk about your program feeling like "home" but we will know for sure on January 5.

Cocky Country Blog: Katie has a nice write-up from Friday on the outgoing USC seniors/graduates. There's going to be some big shoes to fill on the Palmetto Proving Grounds come this spring.

Women's Hoops Congratulations to Coach Staley and the Lady Gamecocks (Ed. - are we still allowed to call them that?) for obliterating Furman 72-33. Staley's squad is sitting nicely at 7-2.

Cornhusker Football From Big Red country, we learn:Spirited Huskers taking businesslike approach into bowl game. And if you're interested in whether the Huskers will overlook the Cap One as an unimportant game in a disappointing season, then read: Sipple: Bowl win could greatly alter perception of Huskers' season .

Loose Feed

Orlando Sentinel: Report: FSU assistant Mark Stoops in talks with Auburn. Well, if it comes to pass, this would at least eliminate one of Ellis Johnson's potential suitors. If EJ is talking (or not talking) to Southern Miss, I can't find anything. [PS - Doesn't it freak you out a bit that the Stoops and the Pelinis grew up in the same town? The nuns of Youngstown must weep to this day for all the broken rulers that had to be expended in their education].

AJC: Richt: ‘I have not talked to any other school about a job’ . CMR is pretty emphatic and there's no reason to disbelieve him. I'm sure you're all aware by now that Houston's Kevin Sumlin accepted the A&M job late Friday.
