Most of us who were among the 18,300 fans and members of the media for Spurrier’s first win at Duke had an inkling he would someday join the coaching elite.

Loose Feed

ESPN SEC Blog: SEC suspends Trae Elston for Texas game. Ed points out some of the inconsistencies on how the league punishes illegal head shots a la Justice Cunningham in the Vandy game. Ed Aschoff is right. There needs to be consistency in how the rule is applied. If Mike Slive can't force himself to be fair (remember how Nick Fairley speared Aaron Murray in 2010 without any repercussion?) then appoint an ombudsman who can.

NBC College Football Talk: Here is Elston's un-flagged hit. I have two comments. One, while we all love hits like this, knowing what we now know about concussions, they're simply too dangerous. Yes, it's football. But football is going to have to change and this change is currently 5 years in the making, so it's not like it's a surprise to anyone. Two - if Elston is to be suspended, then so should the refs who didn't flag it.

Football Rumor Mill: As predicted, gentle readers, the rumor mill says "Former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino is rumored to be on the top of Kentucky’s wish list when they fire Joker Phillips." Plus "Louisville coach Charlie Strong is the hot name at Arkansas right now." I didn't see Charlie-to-Arkie but it makes sense.

Matt Hayes: Blames the ULM debacle on Arkansas for hiring John L. Smith.

SI.com: Ruh-ro, Shaggy - Coach: Miss St. player received money from booster, I would be shocked if the NCAA - after allowing UNC to slide (again) - didn't decide to bring the hammer down on State pour encourager les autres.
