The Gamecocks had to avoid turnovers to have a chance in this game and have done so thus far. In 32 first-half possessions, Carolina only gave it away four times (12.5%). That's good enough to win.
Baylor's two big men - Isaiah Austin and Cory Jefferson - spent most of the first half in foul trouble, coming for five fouls (three and two, respectively) in the first half and only 20 minutes. However, in his 10 minutes, Austin scored 10 points and Carolina did not seem to have an answer for him - that needs to change in the second half.
The Baylor free throw shooting has kept the Gamecocks in the game - despite similar shooting, turnovers, and offensive rebounds, Baylor hasn't been able to turn their free throw advantage into points - they have 11 makes on 22 shots, whereas Carolina's scored on 13 of their 18 free throw attempts. South Carolina leads Baylor 39-38 at halftime.
Tyrone Johnson is having a huge game so far - 5 assists and only 1 turnover. That's the type of point goard production we had to have to have a chance in Waco, and he'll need to keep it up in the second half for us to have a shot at stealing the upset.
