Four-star cornerback Wesley Green signed with South Carolina on Wednesday, becoming the second four-star cornerback and the third four-star defender added to the Gamecocks' commitment list on National Signing Day. The other finalist in the 5'11, 170-pound defensive back's decision was Georgia, although the chances of Green choosing the Bulldogs fell off heavily when he canceled his Jan. 31 official visit to Athens at the last minute.
Green is the No. 16 cornerback prospect and the 160th-ranked overall prospect in the 2014 class, according to the 247Sports Composite index. SB Nation recruiting analyst Bud Elliott evaluated him last spring:
Green has decent height for a cornerback at 5'10, though at just 165 pounds, he will need to add weight. His best attributes are his quickness and his instincts. He seems to always be around the football and makes a lot of plays. He has good ball skills and has a good feel for the game.
He is aggressive in coverage and it's easy to project him being a pest at the next level thanks to his ability to quickly flip his hips. He reminds me a bit of a Tay Cody or Ronde Barber style of player, and a short zone system (cover-two, perhaps) would allow him to best use his instincts, though he'll need to add weight to his frame.
Despite his size, Green is a willing tackler and throws his weight around, though he needs to use better form and not leave his feet so often. I'm also not sure of Green's top speed. I don't believe him to be slow, but he doesn't look like a 4.4 40 player. He is probably quicker than he is fast.
There's an excellent chance that Green will be competing for a starting cornerback job when he arrives at fall camp. Not only is Green is the most highly-rated cornerback of the four that South Carolina signed, but the Gamecocks also have a glaring need a the position. Rico McWilliams is the only returning scholarship cornerback who played cornerback in 2013.
