The Gamecocks travel to Charleston Wednesday night for the first game of this year's home-and-home series against the Bulldogs of The Citadel. Tonight's game was originally scheduled for nearly a month ago, on March 18th, but was postponed due to weather. The second game of the series will be on May 13th and will be the last home game of the regular season. South Carolina is 125-47-1 against The Citadel.
The Gamecocks are 28-8 (8-7 SEC) and are now 2nd in the official RPI rankings. They lost their first non-conference game of the season on Tuesday as they fell 4-1 to Charleston Southern. It was also their first non-conference home loss since the final game of the season-opening series against Liberty in 2013. After another lackluster offensive performance, the Gamecocks are hitting .284 with an on-base percentage of .356. South Carolina's ERA is 1.88 and opponents are hitting .215 against them.
The Bulldogs are 14-23 (2-13 Southern Conference) and are coming off of a weekend loss to conference foe Appalachian State. Their batting average is .271 and their on-base percentage is .353. The Bulldogs have an ERA of 5.75 and opponents are hitting .289 against them.
Freshman right-hander Matthew Vogel will start for the Gamecocks tonight. Vogel has a 6.75 ERA through 9.1 innings of work with 10 strikeouts and 5 walks. This will be his sixth appearance of the season and his first career start. Austin Livingston, a right-handed sophomore, is expected to start for The Citadel. Livingston's ERA is 8.39 and he has 15 strikeouts and 14 walks through 24.2 innings pitched this season.
The Gamecocks have several starters out with injury. Max Schrock has been sick for the past week and though he was originally in Tuesday night's lineup, he was not able to play. Joey Pankake (hamstring), Connor Bright (elbow) and Marcus Mooney (concussion) were all out on Tuesday as well. Holbrook said after the game that he did not expect anyone that was out Tuesday night to play on Wednesday.
Start time: 7 p.m.
Location: Charleston S.C. (Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park)
The game will be available on the radio at 107.5 The Game and via live video streaming from CitadelSports.com for a one-time fee
