With Day 1 of the MLB having come and gone, so far, the South Carolina Gamecocks have not seen a baseball player drafted into MLB. That changes today.
Timothy De Block summarized in our preview of the draft that plenty of Gamecocks seem likely to be chosen in Rounds 3-10, which occur today and can be seen live streaming on MLB.com. Carolina players that seem likely to go off the board start with Grayson Greiner, who is likely the best catcher remaining on the board.
Other Gamecocks that may be taken today include LHP Jordan Montgomery, infielder Joey Pankake, and RHP Joel Seddon. It's also possible that Connor Bright, Tanner English, or Kyle Martin may be selected, given MLB's recent rule changes. The current MLB system allows teams to pay a "bonus pool" to its Rounds 1-10 picks, and any money saved on one of those picks can be used on another. So, at times you'll see players taken outside of their slots because they agree to sign for a dollar value well-below slot, which makes it possible to spend more money on players it drafts in other rounds that they are trying to persuade to leave high school or college to enjoy the rigors of minor league baseball.
The draft begins this afternoon at 12:30pm ET.
