2014 MLB Draft: Joey Pankake drafted by the Detroit Tigers

Gamecocks third basemen Joey Pankake joins Grayson Greiner in the Detroit Tigers organization.

USA TODAY Sports

With the 220th selection in the 2014 MLB Draft the Detroit Tigers select University of South Carolina third basemen Joey Pankake.

As the Gamecocks third basemen/second basemen and left fielder, Pankake batted .303, with a .394 on-base percentage and a .421 slugging percentage. Pankake took a small step back offensively this year and moving off shortstop he struggled defensively posting the lowest fielding percentage among position players. Which is probably why he slipped all the way to the seventh round.

Pankake joins fellow Gamecock Grayson Greiner who was selected by the Tigers in the third round of the MLB Draft Friday. I expect the Tigers to try Pankake at third base to start out. He has a strong arm, so if he proves unable to handle third base he should fit well in a corner outfield spot. I'm not all that worried about his bat.
