David Johnson
RS freshman
6'1'' / 280 lbs
Lithonia, GA
Recruitment:
three-star prospect, 19th weak-side defensive end nationally
Other major offers:
Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi St., N.C. State, Pitt, Vandy
College Career:
Johnson came to Carolina having played outside linebacker in high school, but the Gamecocks quickly moved him to defensive end and he's put on the bulk to match.
2014 Outlook:
Johnson is currently listed third on the depth chart at strong-side end behind Gerald Dixon and Mason Harris. While injuries along the defensive line could force Johnson into action, his role this year is likely to continue developing in order to be ready to make a bigger contribution once some of the guys ahead of him have moved on.
Trivia:
Johnson graduated from Lithonia H.S. along with fellow Gamecocks defensive end Cedrick Cooper.
Beat writer's terrible double-meaning lede:
"It was a David-and-Goliath situation when young David Johnson was forced into action against Georgia due to injuries to the guys ahead of him, but this David followed in the footsteps of his namesake and acquitted himself well."
