Name: Joseph Charlton
Position: Kicker/Punter
Height/Weight: 6'4, 180 pounds
Hometown: Columbia, SC
Rating: 247Sports: Three Star Rivals: Three Star ESPN: Three Star
Charlton is a good pickup for a team that had some issues with punting and on kickoffs early last season. USC is listed on his only offer, but he is listed as the number 2 punter in the nation by 247Sports. His primary recruiter is listed as Joe Robinson.
Strength:
His greatest strength is acting as a punter. He is usually able to get some decent hang time and has a strong enough leg to make punts in the 40-50 yard range. He is also good as a special teams tackler, so if he is the last line of defense, there is a decent chance that he will bring the ball carrier down.
Weaknesses:
Kickoffs will be Charlton's biggest weakness since his distance is fairly inconsistent and since his high school kicks off from the yard line, he will have to get used to kicking from the 25 yard line. Since he is inconsistently able to get touchbacks on kickoffs, he will need to spend time increasing his leg strength before taking over kick offs.
Overall:
Charlton should be able to provide current punter Tyler Hull with some decent competition this fall, but unless Hull really messes up, he should remain the starter. I see Charlton being a good punter for USC following his freshman year.
